Shorthanded Pirates Fall to Marquette

Seton Hall’s women’s basketball team faltered without Savannah Catalon in a 68-61 home loss to Marquette on Wednesday night.

The program did not disclose the reason for Catalon’s absence, her first since January 19 and since tying the Big East’s single-game steals record on Saturday vs. Xavier.

In her stead, Jada Eads stepped up for 26 points, including a 19-point first half capped by a tying buzzer-beater three, but Marquette dominated the glass and the paint as they won the board battle 41-28 and outscored the Pirates in the lane 36-26.

The guard tandem of Lee Volker & Hallie Vice helped carry the Golden Eagles with 24 and 19 points, respectively, to go with a combined 20 rebounds. The team’s leading scorer for the season, Skylar Forbes, finished below average with 11 points, but caught on late, with nine of those coming in the second half.

The Pirates’ leading scorer also had a tough evening, as Faith Masonius finished with just six points while shooting three of 13 from the field and committing four fouls.

Seton Hall had fought back to tie the game multiple times, and even take a 38-33 lead in the third quarter, but what followed may have been the game’s deciding moments.

Marquette ripped off a 10-0 run before the Pirates broke it with the quarter’s final bucket. With that, the Golden Eagles took an eight-point lead to the fourth, and never led by less than five for the rest of the evening.

A seemingly down and out Seton Hall cut the lead from 62-50 with 5:08 to play, to 64-59 with 1:39 left, but a good look for Kaydan Lawson would not fall from downtown, and Marquette hit four straight free throws to help ice it.

The Pirates struggled from the line, including a sequence where they missed four straight free throws in a 16 second span while trailing 62-50. They ultimately finished just seven of 12 from the charity stripe.

Seton Hall’s women’s basketball program is still on pace for its first 20-win regular season since its last NCAA Tournament berth in 2016.

The countdown is on as the Pirates head to Providence for a Sunday matinee.
