11 minutes. That’s exactly how long it took for the New York City Football Club to go from up 2 to down 2 in an embarrassing 4-2 loss on the road to FC Cincinnati. On a night where the 2nd club match in the 2024 Leagues Cup was more about who they were playing in the next round vs IF they would play in the next round, the team dodged bullets against one of the toughest teams in the league with a rocky first half, yet still emerged up 1-0 at halftime thanks to a Santi Rodriguez shot from the left side.
New 2024 acquisition Jovan Mijatović added a second goal during the second half from a bad angle after a rebounded shot came his way, opening up a 2-0 NYCFC lead.
Then in the 76th minute, the wheels fell off. 4 goals allowed in just 11 minutes. You can watch the meltdown here in this quick vid I threw together, plus Nick Cushing’s press conference where I asked him at the top about what happened there.
Couple quick notes:
1) The last time the team gave up 4 goals in a match was back in 2022 twice, April 24th against Toronto and again on June 29 against Cincinnati, winning the first 5-4 and drawing the second. The last time they lost giving up 4 or more was March 29, 2019, a 4-0 loss to Toronto.
2) The loss COULD be a win for NYCFC as they will be playing the New England Revolution on August 9th in the first Knockout Round. The Revs are an East worst 23 points in 23 matches, however the match will be played on the road. More on that later.
