The U.S. Soccer Federation has officially named former U.S. Men’s National Team captain Steve Cherundolo as the new head coach of the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team, placing one of the country’s most respected soccer figures in charge of preparing the squad for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Cherundolo brings an extensive résumé both on and off the field. A three-time FIFA World Cup veteran (2002, 2006 and 2010), the National Soccer Hall of Famer earned 87 caps with the USMNT while enjoying a legendary 15-year career with German Bundesliga club Hannover 96. His 415 appearances remain the longest tenure by an American player in Bundesliga history.
Following his playing career, Cherundolo transitioned seamlessly into coaching, beginning in Germany before returning to the United States to lead the Las Vegas Lights in the USL Championship. He later took over LAFC, where he guided the club to remarkable success, capturing the 2022 MLS Cup, the Supporters’ Shield and the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup while compiling an impressive 106-55-32 record.
U.S. Soccer officials praised Cherundolo’s ability to develop players and his deep understanding of both the American and European game. Chief Operating Officer Dan Helfrich described him as “a proven winner” whose leadership will be instrumental in helping the United States pursue an Olympic medal on home soil.
Cherundolo emphasized the importance of representing the United States, calling the opportunity “one of the greatest honors in sports.” His immediate focus will be identifying and developing the nation’s top young talent through training camps, international friendlies and preparation at the Arthur M. Blank U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Georgia.
The appointment also aligns with U.S. Soccer’s long-term “U.S. Way” philosophy, which seeks to strengthen the pathway from youth national teams to the senior USMNT.
Former teammates and soccer legends quickly voiced their support. Tim Howard praised Cherundolo’s intelligence and leadership, while former Olympian Stu Holden called him “exactly the right choice” to guide the next generation. Former LAFC defender and Italian legend Giorgio Chiellini also endorsed the appointment, citing Cherundolo’s character and ability to develop young players.
With less than two years remaining before the Olympic tournament begins in Los Angeles, U.S. Soccer has entrusted one of its most respected figures with preparing a talented generation that hopes to compete for a medal in front of a home crowd.
