The Victoria Shamrocks used a dominant opening period and a hat trick from Marshal King to defeat the Nanaimo Timbermen 8-3 on Sunday night in WLA action.
King led the Shamrocks with three goals and an assist for four points. Zach Manns added a pair of goals, while Kyle Pepper had a goal and an assist, and Patrick Dodds recorded two assists.
In goal, Chris Origlieri stopped 42 of 45 shots for the win.
The Timbermen were led by Noah Manning, who scored two of Nanaimo’s three goals. Andrew Bowman had the other goal, while Tristan Kirkham recorded two assists.
Colby Bowman got the start between the pipes and stopped 40 of 48 shots in the loss.
The Victoria Shamrocks continue to hold first place in the WLA with a 12-2 record. Meanwhile, Nanaimo sits in the fourth and final playoff spot at 6-8.
First Period
Victoria wasted little time taking control of the game.
King opened the scoring at the 3:22 mark before Chris Wardle doubled the lead midway through the period.
Manning briefly cut the deficit to one for Nanaimo just 31 seconds later, but the Shamrocks answered emphatically.
Manns scored twice, while King added his second of the night late in the frame as Victoria built a commanding 5-1 lead after the opening 20 minutes.
Second Period
The Shamrocks extended their advantage early in the second when King completed his hat trick at the 5:02 mark to make it 6-1.
The Timbermen showed some life in the second half of the period. Andrew Bowman found the back of the net before Manning scored his second of the game with 46 seconds remaining to make it 6-3 at the end of the second period.
Third Period
The Shamrocks shut the door in the final period, limiting the Timbermen to just nine shots.
Pepper restored Victoria’s four-goal advantage midway through the third.
Jacob Hickey, with an assist from Origlieri, scored with 1:24 remaining to lead the Victoria Shamrocks to an 8-3 victory.
