OTTAWA — Whenever a football team struggles, the quarterback often becomes the easiest target.
According to Frank Stanisci and David Morassutti, however, that’s far too simplistic when evaluating the Ottawa REDBLACKS.
Following Ottawa’s 40-17 loss to Edmonton, the pair argued the club’s issues extend well beyond Jake Maier or whoever lines up behind center. Instead, they pointed to roster construction, defensive struggles and broader organizational decisions as the bigger concerns facing the franchise.
One of the most significant points raised centered on former Ottawa quarterback Drew Brown.
Brown demonstrated during last season’s East Division Final that he could compete at a high level, yet the organization ultimately moved in a different direction. Frank questioned whether Ottawa spent enough time strengthening the roster around Brown rather than continuing to search for another quarterback solution.
Defensively, Ottawa continues to allow opponents too many opportunities, making life difficult regardless of who’s leading the offense.
Morassutti noted the defense has struggled throughout the season, while Frank argued focusing solely on quarterback play ignores the larger roster issues preventing the REDBLACKS from consistently competing.
The discussion also touched on leadership within the organization.
While neither host rushed to blame ownership directly, both suggested accountability has to extend beyond the coaching staff. Successful franchises consistently evaluate roster building, player development and long-term planning—not just the most visible position on the field.
Finding a franchise quarterback remains one of the CFL’s greatest challenges, but Ottawa’s recent performances suggest simply changing quarterbacks won’t solve everything.
Until the REDBLACKS improve the team around that position, the cycle of searching for answers under center may continue regardless of who’s taking the snaps.
