Major League Soccer has announced the appointment of U.S. Soccer legend and MLS icon Eddie Pope as Senior Vice President of Sporting Development for Major League Soccer and Senior Vice President of Competition & Operations for MLS NEXT Pro.
Pope will report directly to MLS Executive Vice President of Sporting Development and MLS NEXT Pro President Ali Curtis, taking on a key leadership role overseeing player development, competition operations, and the continued evolution of the professional pathway throughout North American soccer.
In his new position, Pope will help align development initiatives across MLS, MLS NEXT Pro, and MLS NEXT, ensuring a more seamless progression for young players moving from elite youth soccer to the professional ranks. He will also oversee several critical departments within MLS NEXT Pro, including Competition, Medical, Player Relations, and League Operations.
Additionally, Pope will play a significant role in guiding MLS’ on-field innovation efforts, helping shape new sporting initiatives and competition rules as the league continues its rapid growth both domestically and internationally.
“Eddie is an ideal fit for this role,” said Ali Curtis in the league’s announcement. “Through every stage of his career—as a legendary player and as an executive—Eddie has always carried himself with class, professionalism, and integrity. His perspective and experience will be invaluable as we continue to grow the game and develop the next generation.”
Pope’s resume makes him one of the most respected figures in American soccer. During his playing career, the defender earned 82 caps for the United States Men’s National Team, represented the country in three FIFA World Cups, and competed in the 1996 Olympic Games. He also won three MLS Cup championships and was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2011.
Following his retirement, Pope transitioned into soccer administration, serving as Director of Player Relations for the Major League Soccer Players Association before joining sports agency Octagon as Director of North American Soccer. Most recently, he served as Chief Sporting Officer for Carolina Core FC in MLS NEXT Pro.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina and the second overall selection in the inaugural 1996 MLS College Draft by D.C. United, Pope has remained deeply connected to the growth of American soccer throughout his career. Earlier this year, he was also inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.

As MLS continues expanding its player development infrastructure ahead of future international competitions and sustained league growth, Pope’s experience as both an elite player and respected executive positions him to play a central role in shaping the next generation of professional soccer in North America.
