Despite falling 1-0 to Liverpool in New York, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson believes his side leaves Yankee Stadium with valuable lessons and plenty of positives as preparations continue for the upcoming season.
Facing one of Europe’s elite clubs in front of more than 42,000 fans for the Premier League Summer Series 2026, Wrexham weathered an early storm before growing into the contest. Parkinson admitted his team was fortunate not to concede in the opening minutes, crediting goalkeeper Danny Ward for making key saves that kept the match level before Wrexham settled into the game.
The deciding goal came on an unfortunate sequence that saw Liverpool benefit from a deflection after Wrexham lost possession in midfield. While disappointed with the manner of the goal, Parkinson felt his squad created opportunities of its own and viewed the narrow defeat as another productive step through a demanding preseason schedule that has also included matches against Manchester United and Leeds United.
Playing on Yankee Stadium’s unique baseball configuration presented an additional challenge, particularly early in the match, but Parkinson praised his players for adapting as the game progressed. He also noted Liverpool’s aggressive pressing under new manager Andoni Iraola, highlighting the intensity immediately after turnovers as one of the Reds’ biggest strengths on the night.
Beyond the result, the Wrexham boss was impressed by the reception his club received in the United States. Calling the atmosphere “very special,” Parkinson said he was amazed by the number of supporters wearing Wrexham shirts throughout New York City and appreciated the warm welcome the club has received during its East Coast tour.
With another preseason test awaiting in Philadelphia, Parkinson believes the Liverpool match provided exactly the type of competitive challenge his squad needs before the new campaign begins, emphasizing that the focus now shifts to building on the positives while continuing preparations for the season ahead.
