The U.S. Under-19 Men’s National Team completed a flawless group stage at the 2026 CONCACAF U-20 Men’s Championship on Friday night, overpowering Cuba 5-0 in Puebla, Mexico to finish atop Group A and claim the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed heading into the knockout rounds.
Already unbeaten entering the match, the Americans needed an emphatic performance to edge Mexico on goal difference for the tournament’s top seed. Gonzalo Segares’ squad delivered exactly that, scoring five unanswered goals while recording its third consecutive clean sheet to finish group play with an impressive +11 goal differential.
The United States wasted little time asserting control.
Just two minutes into the contest, Jaidyn Contreras showcased his creativity by freezing a defender with a convincing shot fake before delivering a pinpoint cross to the back post. Ruben Ramos timed his run perfectly and powered a header into the net, giving the Americans the fastest goal of the tournament and extending Ramos’ scoring streak to three consecutive matches.
The relentless pressure continued throughout the opening half.
Midfielder Alex Shaw doubled the advantage in the 26th minute after capitalizing on a misplaced Cuban clearance. The midfielder struck a driven low shot beyond goalkeeper Yurixander Zayas, giving the U.S. a deserved 2-0 lead.
Cuba’s best opportunity came shortly afterward when Alexandro Rojas found Yankarlos Iglesias with a dangerous chance inside the penalty area. Goalkeeper Kayne Rizvanovich responded with a strong save before defender Braden Dunham cleared away the ensuing danger, preserving another clean sheet.
Knowing four additional goals would secure the top overall seed, the Americans maintained their aggressive attacking approach after halftime. While two physical challenges inside the penalty area were reviewed by VAR, referee Jorge Leira ruled against awarding penalties on both occasions.
The breakthrough finally arrived again in the 75th minute.
Substitute Brandon Dayes, who had entered just ten minutes earlier, rose above the Cuban defense to head home a perfectly delivered near-post corner from Contreras, extending the lead to 3-0.
Three minutes later, the United States effectively sealed the tournament’s top seed with one of its best team goals of the night. Din Klapija found Xanti Oyharçabal, who unselfishly laid the ball into the path of Joshua Torquato. The defender calmly drilled a left-footed finish into the bottom corner to make it 4-0.
The scoring wasn’t finished.
In the 82nd minute, Dylan Vanney combined beautifully with Oyharçabal in a give-and-go before weaving into the penalty area and shielding off defenders to slot home the fifth and final goal of the evening.
The balanced offensive display saw five different American players find the scoresheet, while Contreras and Oyharçabal each registered two assists in a performance that highlighted the squad’s attacking depth.
By the final whistle, the statistics reflected the United States’ dominance. The Americans outshot Cuba 16-8, placed nine efforts on target, and limited their opponents to just one shot on goal while earning six corner kicks.
The victory capped a perfect group stage for Segares’ side, which scored 11 goals, conceded none, and enters the quarterfinals as arguably the tournament’s most complete team.
The United States will now await the eighth-seeded team following the conclusion of Group C play, with the quarterfinal scheduled for August 4 at Estadio Universitario BUAP in Puebla. With confidence soaring and momentum firmly on their side, the Americans now shift their attention toward the knockout rounds and a chance to compete for the CONCACAF U-20 Championship.
