Mauricio Pochettino is making one thing clear as the United States Men’s National Team begins a new cycle: past accomplishments will not guarantee future opportunities.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the USMNT’s upcoming four-match window, Pochettino repeatedly described the beginning of the post-2026 World Cup era as a “fresh start,” with a younger and expanded player pool getting opportunities as the program begins its long-term build toward the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
That philosophy was evident when Pochettino was asked about Christian Pulisic’s absence from the 28-player roster. Rather than address Pulisic individually, the USMNT coach said the selected players represent the group his staff believes is best suited for this particular camp.
The approach represents a significant change from the previous cycle, when Pochettino was tasked with narrowing the player pool ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Now, the focus has shifted toward identifying and developing another generation of talent.
Among the most intriguing additions is a 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan, whose MLS performances have attracted considerable attention. Pochettino described the youngster as “special” and deserving of his opportunity while emphasizing the need for patience.
“He’s only 16. He’s a kid,” Pochettino said, adding that the coaching staff wants to provide an environment where he can continue developing while learning how to deal with difficult moments.
The youth movement, however, isn’t simply a four-game experiment.
Pochettino said young players who perform at the required level can continue earning opportunities, arguing against automatically favoring older players because of experience. His message to the entire player pool was particularly direct.
“Football is about today, soccer is about today,” Pochettino said.
That philosophy also applies to returning players such as Yunus Musah. Pochettino said Musah earned another opportunity through his club performances while stressing that the national-team door remains open to players in MLS and abroad.
The four-year project extends beyond the senior team’s pursuit of the 2030 World Cup. Pochettino also identified the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as a major objective and discussed closer cooperation between the senior team, U-23 program and U.S. Soccer’s youth structure. He said the federation’s ambition is to develop a team capable of competing for Olympic gold.
Veterans will have a role in that development as well. Pochettino wants experienced players to serve as natural examples for newcomers, noting that younger teammates will observe their behavior both on and off the field.
For Pochettino, the message entering the new cycle is straightforward: reputation may open a door, but current performance will determine who remains.
