New York City FC has spent much of 2026 building around youth. On Tuesday, the club went in a decidedly different direction.
NYCFC officially claimed 31-year-old center back Matt Miazga off waivers through the end of the 2026 season, adding an experienced and sometimes combustible personality to a team desperately searching for momentum.
And maybe combustible is exactly what NYCFC needs.
Miazga arrives after being waived by FC Cincinnati, where he made 108 appearances after joining the club in 2022. His time in Cincinnati included MLS Defender of the Year, MLS Best XI and All-Star honors in 2023, along with a significant knee injury suffered the following season.
His résumé isn’t the most intriguing part of the move, however. His personality might be.
NYCFC has looked strangely flat during its recent slide. There’s talent on the roster, but the team has lacked the kind of veteran presence capable of changing the emotional temperature of a match.
Miazga has never had much difficulty doing that.
His career has included plenty of controversy, including a three-match suspension following a 2023 playoff incident involving the officials’ locker room. He has developed a reputation as an instigator—the type of player opposing supporters love to hate.
But those players can become incredibly popular when they’re wearing your colors.
Think of former New Jersey Devils forward Claude Lemieux. He wasn’t brought onto the ice to make friends. His teammates loved having him and opponents hated seeing him.
Miazga has some of that same quality.
For NYCFC, the gamble is also relatively limited. He’s under contract only through the remainder of the season. If the experiment doesn’t work, both sides can move on.
If it does?
NYCFC may have found a veteran capable of giving a young roster some edge.
There is another fascinating wrinkle: Miazga came through the New York Red Bulls academy and began his professional career with the club. Now he’s crossing the Hudson River Derby divide at a time when NYCFC is trying to recover from a difficult stretch.
Supporters may remember which shirt he used to wear, but—as Jerry Seinfeld famously observed about sports fandom—we’re ultimately rooting for the laundry.
Miazga also comes home with extensive experience. The Clifton, New Jersey native has played across Europe and earned 28 USMNT caps in addition to his MLS career.
NYCFC doesn’t necessarily need Miazga to become its long-term defensive centerpiece.
It needs somebody to walk into the room right now and change something.
Matt Miazga has spent much of his career getting reactions out of people.
If he can get one out of NYCFC, this could be a very worthwhile gamble.
