Atlas in early hole as Mic Kelly has first half hat trick

Boston took a 2-0 lead on goals from Mikey Weisshaar (4:15) and Mic Kelly (7:04). Matt Traynor (9:40) got Atlas on the board, but Marcus Holman scored with 13 seconds left to give the Cannons a 3-1 lead after the first quarter. Kelly (0:25 second quarter) quickly extended Boston’s lead to 4-1. However, goals from Hugh Kelleher (6:38) and Xander Dickson (9:49) cut the lead to 4-3. Kelly’s third goal of the half (10:54) gave Boston a 5-3 lead, before Kelleher (11:32) and Nathan Laliberte (11:39) scored seven seconds apart to tie the game at 5-5 going into halftime.

Atlas survives with big fourth quarter

The Cannons opened the second half with Graydon Hogg (1:23) and Kelly’s fourth goal of the game (2:44) for a 7-5 lead. Kelleher’s hat trick goal (6:33) and Traynor’s second (8:24) tied the game once again, 7-7. Rookie Jack Regnery scored his first career goal 29 seconds later to put Boston up 8-7 going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter opened with Connor Shellenberger (1:11) pulling Atlas even for the third time. Holman seemingly took the air out of Long Island with back-to-back goals four seconds apart (3:49; 3:53) that put the Cannons back on top, 10-8. But Traynor scored his hat trick goal (5:40), then Bryan Costabile fired the only 2-point goal of the game (8:35) to give Atlas their first lead of the game, 11-10.

The lead was short-lived, as Hogg scored his second goal 25 seconds later to tie the game at 11-11, while also drawing a penalty from New York for illegal head contact. The Atlas not only killed the penalty, but took the lead again when Shellenberger found Dickson from behind the net for his second goal of the game (9:32). Holman nearly sent the game to overtime with a shot that hit two posts and appeared to land inside the goal line. However, following a review of the play, it was determined that the ball did not completely cross the goal line and no goal was awarded to the Cannons, preserving a crucial win for Atlas.
