Brady Kearnan The Hero In OT Spoiling Excelsiors Big Comeback

The Brooklin Lacrosse Club (1-1) visited the Memorial Arena in Brampton, Ontario to face the Excelsiors (0-2) in Thursday night Major Series Lacrosse action.

The goaltending match-up had Lukas Coote in net for Brooklin facing Connor O’Toole in net for Brampton.

Brooklin got off to a great start in this game.  Up 7-1 in the first, Brooklin chasing Excelsiors starter Connor O’Toole in favor of Riley Hutchcraft.  While Brooklin got one more in the period, Brampton rallied with three goals to end the frame with momentum.

In the following two periods, not only did Brampton’s defense tighten up, but their transition game came to life led by Josh Medeiros (3g,1a), Zach Sunderland (1g,3a), and Liam Patten (1g,1a).  With a late push, the Excelsiors scored four times in the 5:56 to tie the game with just 0:36 seconds remaining.  This game would need extra time to find a winner.

In overtime, Brady Kearnan gathered a rebound in front of the net, firing a laser to the far corner for the game winner.  Brooklin holds on for a 12-11 victory.

To The Game:

Brooklin scored early and often in this game to set the tone.  Connor Kearnan scored off a Brady Kearnan pass at 2:01, followed by a quick stick from Owen Wills off a Sean Westley pass at 5:42.

Brady Kearnan then converted a Westley pass at 6:29, followed by Will MacLeod with a sidearm snipe to the far corner off a Brady Kearnan feed at 8:10.

Matt Perreira got the Excelsiors on the board in transition converting a Josh Medeiros pass at 8:59, but Sean Westley answered back finishing a Brady Kearnan pass at 9:33.

Nate Woods continued the barrage for Brooklin scoring off a loose ball, going coast to coast at 11:59, followed by Brady Kearnan’s second of the period off an Alexis Simard pass at 12:52.

The Excelsiors replaced Connor O’Toole with Riley Hutchcraft in net.

Luke Keenan welcomed Hutchcraft to the game with a blast off a Nick Chaykowsky pass at 13:21.

Brampton finally got on track with three late goals.

Matt Pereira got his second of the period off a beautiful feed from Eric Ward at 13:57, followed by Briley Maxwell firing a low to low shot off a Zach Terry pass at 14:19.  Zach Sunderland then added another transition goal off a Liam Patten pass at 16:04.

After one period, Brooklin 8 Brampton 4.

Second Period:

Nate Woods opened the second period scoring with his second of the game off a Nicholas Volkov pass at 5:01, but an unassisted transition goal from Josh Medeiros 0:43 seconds later got the Excelsiors back on track.

Zach Terry blasted a Briley Maxwell pass to the corner at 8:40, followed by Maxwell himself finishing a Terry feed at 13:12 to bring Brampton within two goals.

Michael White’s late goal would give Brooklin a little breathing room heading to the third period.

After two periods, Brooklin 10 Brampton 7.

Langley

Third Period:

While Brooklin’s defense was holding the Excelsiors at bay, Sean Westley converted a Brady Kearnan pass to increase the lead to 11-7 at 10:08.

Brampton’s transition game came back to life late in the period.  Josh Medeiros scored off a Neal Adamson pass at 13:32, followed by Matt Pereira’s third of the game at 15:06.

Liam Patten brought the Excelsiors within one with a screenshot off a Zach Sunderland pass at 16:03, followed by Josh Medeiros with his third of the game with just 0:36 seconds left, sending this game to overtime.

After regulation, Brampton 11 Brooklin 11.

Overtime:

An extra period full of end to end action looked like it was going to solve nothing, with both goalies stopping everything that came their way. 

However, late in the period Brady Kearnan was able to grab a rebound in front of the net, firing a laser to the far corner for his third of the night, and more importantly, the game winner at 7:20.

Final score, Brooklin 12 Brampton 11.

Shots on goal favored Brooklin 67-45.
