Charlotte FC is eager to put its extended break behind it and return to MLS action, with head coach Dean Smith expressing confidence that his squad is healthy, motivated and prepared for a demanding second half of the season. Speaking ahead of Charlotte’s return against Atlanta United, Smith emphasized that the club has used the time away wisely while keeping its focus firmly on improving performances on both ends of the pitch.
The biggest absentee remains winger AJ, who continues to recover from a shoulder injury. New signing Maxi is also unavailable as he awaits the completion of his visa process before returning to the United States. Smith explained that the club is working to bring him back as quickly as possible, after which Charlotte’s medical staff will evaluate his match fitness before reintegrating him into the squad.
Despite the lengthy layoff between league matches, Smith dismissed concerns that his players may be rusty. Charlotte scheduled competitive training sessions and a friendly against Austin FC to maintain fitness and sharpness, with nearly every player receiving significant minutes. The manager joked that he hadn’t “left any of them outside overnight in the rain to get rusty,” underscoring his belief that the team is physically ready to compete.
Several players have impressed during the break, including Tim Ream, who recently returned from FIFA World Cup duty with the United States. Smith praised the veteran defender’s professionalism and noted that his recent competitive matches have actually left him in a strong rhythm heading into league play. Meanwhile, players such as Will Cleary, Nathan Byrne and Idan Toklomati have worked through minor injuries but are progressing toward full availability.
Defensively, Charlotte’s focus remains reducing costly mistakes. While Smith believes the team’s defensive shape has generally been solid, he acknowledged that conceding too many goals from outside the penalty area has hurt the club this season. Improving pressure on the ball and eliminating individual errors have been priorities throughout the break without sacrificing the attacking identity that has produced more goals than in previous campaigns.
Smith also made it clear that Charlotte will not underestimate Atlanta United despite their current place in the standings. After watching Atlanta’s recent performance against Nashville SC, he came away impressed with their quality and believes Wednesday’s match will present a significant challenge. He also highlighted the growing rivalry between the two clubs, pointing to the passion shown by Charlotte supporters who consistently travel in large numbers for matches in Atlanta.
Looking ahead, Smith is approaching the remainder of the season one match at a time. With a congested August schedule looming, squad depth and player fitness will be critical. He also stressed the importance of confidence, particularly for attacking players, explaining that technical ability alone is not enough without the proper mentality. In his view, confidence is one of the most important qualities a player can possess, and Charlotte hopes to carry that mindset into what promises to be a pivotal second half of the MLS campaign.
