Denver Summit FC was unable to capitalize on a scoreless first half Wednesday night, falling 2-0 to the North Carolina Courage at Centennial Stadium in front of 11,008 fans. The result drops the Summit to 5-7-5 (20 points), while the Courage improved to 8-6-3 (27 points) after earning their second consecutive victory.
For 45 minutes, Denver matched one of the league’s most dangerous attacking sides. The Summit generated quality chances and produced one of their strongest opening halves of the season, recording the second-most shots on target in a first half during the club’s inaugural campaign. However, the breakthrough never came.
North Carolina seized control shortly after halftime. In the 48th minute, Riley Jackson calmly converted a penalty kick to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. Denver continued to search for an equalizer but was repeatedly denied before Ally Schlegel put the match away in the 81st minute, finishing off the Courage’s second goal of the night.
Despite the loss, several Summit players delivered noteworthy performances.
Goalkeeper Abby Smith was once again called into action, making seven saves to keep Denver within striking distance. It marked her second-highest save total of the 2026 NWSL season and prevented the final margin from becoming even larger.
Midfielder Delanie Sheehan reached a significant personal milestone by making her 100th NWSL regular-season appearance. The veteran completed 27 accurate passes at an 82 percent success rate while adding two shots during another steady performance in midfield.
Rookie forward Yuzuki Yamamoto earned just her second career start—and first since May 29—playing 54 minutes. The Japanese attacker recorded a shot on target while completing every pass she attempted, continuing to show promise as she receives additional opportunities in Denver’s attack.
Forward Natasha “Tash” Flint also enjoyed an active evening, finishing with seven total shots—the highest single-match total by a Summit player this season. Although Denver was unable to find the back of the net, Flint consistently pressured the Courage defense throughout the match.
The defeat came in one of the club’s final inaugural-season first-time matchups, as Denver and North Carolina met for the first time in franchise history. While the Summit remain outside the playoff positions, the club continues to see encouraging individual performances from veterans and young players alike as it builds toward the future.
Denver will have little time to dwell on the result, returning to action this weekend when it hosts the Utah Royals in another important NWSL fixture as the race for postseason positioning continues. The match marked the first-ever meeting between the Summit and Courage and featured milestone appearances and standout individual performances despite the final score.
