Ethan M’Lot Scores Game-Winner as Lakers Stun Shamrocks in OT

Ethan M’Lot found the back of the net 6:19 into overtime as the last-place Burnaby Lakers defeated the first-place Victoria Shamrocks 10-9 on Friday night.

Burnaby held a 6-4 lead heading into the third period before Victoria mounted a comeback to take a 9-7 lead.

However, Joel McCormick scored twice in the final 5:34 of regulation, including the tying goal with just 12 seconds remaining, to send the game into overtime.

McCormick led the Lakers with four goals and two assists, while M’Lot finished with a goal and five assists.

Between the pipes, Marc Rippberger was outstanding for the Lakers, stopping 49 of 58 shots for the win.

For Victoria, Marshal King led the way with four goals and an assist, while Zach Manns finished with a hat trick and two assists.

Adam Bland got the start in goal for the Shamrocks and stopped 12 of 18 shots before being pulled in favour of Chris Origlieri after allowing six goals. Origlieri stopped 21 of 25 shots the rest of the way.

First Period

The Shamrocks got off to a quick start as Manns scored off a feed from Brodie Wade just 58 seconds into the game.

Burnaby answered with a pair of goals. Ben Stewart got the Lakers on the board at the 4:07 mark, and just over a minute later Ryan Favaro scored on the power play to give Burnaby a 2-1 lead.

King tied the game with an unassisted marker at 7:54, but the Lakers responded with another two-goal run.

McCormick scored his first of the game on the power play at 10:16, and Finn Halladay made it 4-2 at the 15:03 mark.

Victoria narrowed the lead with 3:38 remaining in the period as Manns scored again, leaving Burnaby with a 4-3 lead heading into the second.

Second Period

Burnaby started to pull away midway through the second period.

McCormick scored off a feed from Carter Torok at the 10:16 mark, and Favaro made it 6-3 with a power-play goal at 11:50.

King rounded out the low-scoring period with 2:52 left on the clock as the Shamrocks trailed 6-4.

Third Period

The Shamrocks came roaring back with four straight goals to open the third period.

King scored at the 7:53 mark, followed by Jacob Hickey at 8:39 to tie the game 6-6.

King struck again at 9:12, and Derek Lloyd scored just 27 seconds later as Victoria netted four goals in less than two minutes.

Jake Young got the Lakers back on the board at 13:19. However, Manns answered just 26 seconds later to restore Victoria’s two-goal lead at 9-7.

McCormick was the hero for Burnaby late in regulation. He scored at 14:26 to make it a one-goal game before tying it with just 12 seconds remaining after the Lakers pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker.

Overtime

The defences held firm as the Lakers outshot the Shamrocks just 2-1 in the extra frame.

However, Ethan M’Lot came through 6:19 into overtime, scoring the game-winner to give Burnaby a 10-9 victory.
