New York City FC’s struggles continued Wednesday evening as the Boys in Blue suffered a 2-0 defeat against Inter Miami CF at Nu Stadium, extending a difficult stretch of results as the 2026 Major League Soccer regular season approaches its conclusion.

First-half goals from Germán Berterame and Rodrigo De Paul provided the difference for the hosts, who secured their place in the 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs with the victory.

For NYCFC, the defeat represented another frustrating setback in a season marked by inconsistency, leaving the club facing mounting pressure in the Eastern Conference standings.

Inter Miami Takes Control in First Half

Playing in front of 25,773 supporters, Inter Miami established control during the opening 45 minutes, with Berterame and De Paul finding the back of the net to give the reigning MLS Cup champions a commanding advantage.

New York City entered the contest hoping to rebound from its recent 2-1 defeat against Chicago Fire FC, but Miami’s early offensive production forced the visitors into another uphill battle.

Despite conceding twice, goalkeeper Matt Freese continued to provide resistance, recording four saves to prevent the deficit from growing.

Freese’s performance also established a new club record. His 23 career MLS regular-season saves against Inter Miami surpassed former NYCFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson’s previous mark of 19.

Missed Penalty Adds to NYCFC Frustration

New York City had an opportunity to cut into Miami’s advantage late in the contest when midfielder Nico Fernández Mercau stepped forward to take a penalty kick.

However, his attempt was saved, denying the visitors a potential lifeline and allowing Inter Miami to preserve its two-goal advantage.

The missed opportunity summarized another frustrating evening for a New York City attack that has struggled to consistently turn promising situations into goals.

Forward Alonso Martínez, making his 50th MLS regular-season start for the club, was among those seeking to provide an attacking spark.

Ultimately, Miami maintained its defensive composure to secure all three points.

Milestones Highlight Difficult Evening

Although the result disappointed NYCFC supporters, several individual achievements provided notable moments.

Freese made his 125th appearance across all competitions, while defender Kevin O’Toole reached 100 career MLS regular-season appearances for New York City.

James Sands and Thiago Martins also established a shared club record with their ninth MLS regular-season starts against Inter Miami.

Perhaps the most encouraging development was the return of forward Talles Magno.

The Brazilian entered in the 85th minute, making his first appearance since August 23 after recovering from injury.

His return could provide additional attacking depth as NYCFC attempts to salvage its remaining campaign.

NYCFC Faces Mounting Playoff Pressure

The loss leaves New York City in 10th place in the Eastern Conference, according to the club’s latest match notes, with an 8-12-9 record.

The Boys in Blue have scored 42 goals while conceding 40 through their first 29 matches, illustrating the narrow margins that have characterized much of their season.

Despite Wednesday’s setback, NYCFC retains a 6-4-4 all-time regular-season record against Miami.

However, historical success offers little consolation as the club looks to regain momentum.

With Inter Miami celebrating another postseason qualification, New York City must focus on finding greater consistency and converting opportunities if it hopes to remain in the playoff conversation.
