Lakers Aggressiveness Pays Off With Huge Win Over Chiefs

The Six Nations Chiefs (12-2) traveled east to face the Peterborough Lakers (10-4) on Thursday night in Major Series Lacrosse action at the Memorial Centre in Peterborough, Ontario.

The goaltending match-up had Doug Jamieson in net for the Chiefs facing Nick Rose in net for the Lakers.

Peterborough played the game of their year to this point.  The first period had them jump out to a 3-0 lead, but more importantly they didn’t give the Chiefs any room on the floor, with great, suffocating defense. As the second period began, the special teams started to take shape with a shorthanded goal, as well as a power-play goal.   Up 7-1, the Lakers were able to chase Doug Jamieson from the game. However, the Chiefs did show signs of life at the end of the second with a three late goals, setting the stage for a memorable third period.

Peterborough kept up the aggressive defense, frustrating the Chiefs in the third.  A couple of quick goals increased the Lakers lead to five with half a period to go. Two power-play goals, as well as an even strength goal had the Chiefs within two.  Down the stretch, the game got aggressive, but the Lakers were able to prevail.   Peterborough wins 10-7.

To The Game:

The Lakers got on the board early with a low to low laser to the far corner from Carter Page off a Taite Cattoni pass at 0:36 seconds, followed by Justin Sykes retrieving his own rebound at 4:02.  Peterborough kept the early pressure up on the power-play with Thomas Hoggarth converting a Justin Sykes pass from in close at 7:00.

Larson Sundown got the Chiefs on the board with a diving shot from in close off a Josh Byrne pass at 10:03.

After one period, Peterborough 3 Six Nations 1.

Second Period:

Carter Page opened the second period with a highlight reel goal.  Page scored shorthanded converting a beautiful pass from Mitch Ogilvie in transition at 1:28, followed by a power-play marker from Thomas Hoggarth off a Page feed at 5:43.

The Lakers continued the barrage with an outside howitzer from Braedon Saris off a Mike Robinson pass at 9:33, followed by Matt Gilray off a Jake Withers faceoff win just 0:06 seconds later.

The Chiefs replaced Doug Jamieson with Warren Hill.

The Chiefs got one back on the power-play when Brendan Bomberry fired a high to low shot off a Shayne Jackson pass at 15:18, followed by Lyle Thompson with a dive from in front of the net off a Dhane Smith pass at 18:07.  Randy Staats converted a late give and go from Dhane Smith at 19:59.

After two periods, Peterborough 7 Six Nations 4.

Lakers

Third Period:

Peterborough opened the third period scoring on the power-play with Carter Page grabbing the rebound off a Thomas Hoggarth shot at 4:35, followed by with a goal from Justin Sykes diving across the crease at 7:59.

The Chiefs got back on the board  with Lyle Thompson blasting a Larson Sundown pass on the power-play at 11:37, followed by an outside shot from Josh Byrne from also on the power-play at 14:57.  The Game tightened up considerably when Larson Sundown converted a Steve Priolo pass from in close 0:12 seconds later.

The Lakers sealed the deal with a power-play goal of their own when Mike Robinson fired a high to low shot off a Brad McCulley pass at 18:54.

Final score, Peterborough 10 Six Nations 7.
Shots on goal favored the Chiefs 55-50.
