Lakers Gut Out Another Tough Victory

The Oakville Rock (5-10) traveled east to face the Peterborough Lakers (11-4) in Major Series Lacrosse action at the Memorial Centre in Peterborough, Ontario.

The goaltending match-up had Landon Kells in net for the Rock facing Drew Hutchison in net for the Lakers.

The opening period was a clinic of goaltending.   Landon Kells made 25 saves while Drew Hutchison had 15 saves as the teams headed to the dressing room tied 1-1.

The second saw play getting chippier, but also the teams found ways to score.  Vollying back and forth, Oakville, led by Carson Moyer took a number of leads only to have the Lakers come back continuously.   Peterborough was finally able to grab the lead near then end of the period off a howitzer from Braedon Saris to take a 6-5 advantage to the dressing room.

The third period didn’t disappoint.   End to end action with the Lakers grasping to a one goal lead.  Brad McCulley scored a beautiful behind the back shot late, followed by an empty net goal from Ben Trumble.  Peterborough comes away with a 9-6 victory.

To The Game:

The Lakers got on the board first when Mike Robinson fired an outside low to low shot off a Ben Trumble pass at 3:02, but Chris Weier scored in transition unassisted at 5:52 to tie the game for Oakville.

After one period, Peterborough 1 Oakville 1.

Second Period:

The Rock got on the board first when Ty English fired a low to low laser off a Josh Dawick pass at 0:25 seconds, but Braedon Saris tied the game off a Brad McCulley feed at 4:35.

Carson Moyer gave Oakville the lead once again on the power-play with a blast off a Josh Dawick pass at 6:26, but Holden Cattoni fired a low to low rocket that beat Landon Kells stickside off a Joe Resetarits pass at 6:51.

Carson Moyer added his second of the period with a high to high shot over Drew Hutchison’s shoulder off a Josh Dawick pass at 8:00, but Joe Resetarits fired a low to low laser shorthanded off a Colton Armstrong pass in transition at 10:22 to tie the game yet again.

The Rock regained the lead when Jack McAlpine tightrope walked the crease to beat Hutchison off a Josh Dawick pass at 14:17, but Ben Trumble scored from in close unassisted at 16:43.

Braedon Saris finally gave Peterborough the lead late in the period with an absolute howitzer off a Dylan Hutchison feed at 18:50.

After two periods, Peterborough 6 Oakville 5.

Third Period:

The Rock tied the game when Jack McAlpine scored from in close off a Zane Dalpe pass at 3:30, but a high to high shot from Holden Cattoni found the top corner off a Thomas Hoggarth pass at 8:31 to once again give Peterborough the lead.

The final part of the period saw both teams going end to end with no answers.  Both Landon Kells and Drew Hutchison were superb in net down the stretch.

Peterborough put the game on ice when Brad McCulley fired a behind the back beauty that beat Kells unassisted at 18:59, followed by an empty net goal from Ben Trumble off a Colton Armstrong feed at 19:13.

Final score, Peterborough 9 Oakville 6.

Game Stats:

  • Shots on goal favored the Lakers 62-43
  • The faceoff battle was even at 9 for 18 each.
  • Oakville went 1 for 2 on the power-play.
  • Peterborough went 0 for 1 on the power-play, but also scored a shorthanded goal.
