Marinier Scores In OT To Split Weekend Set With North Stars

The Owen Sound North Stars (1-1) took on the Cobourg Kodiaks (1-1) in the second half of their home and home weekend series at the Jack Berger Arena in Port Hope, Ontario.

The goalie match-up had Andrew Kidd in net for Owen Sound facing Jackson Brown in net for Cobourg.

A game in which special teams played a huge role.  The Owen Sound North Stars scored a whopping five power-play goals, but the three shorthanded goals that Cobourg potted were equally as impressive.

This back and forth affair had the teams tied on five seperate occasions, with no team getting any wider than a two goal lead.

Holden Patterson (3g,3a) and Alex Marinier (2g,5a) led the way for the Kodiaks, with Marinier getting the game winner in overtime for the 11-10 victory.  The North Stars put up a valiant effort behind the play of Jackson Webster (3g,4a), Jake McNabb (2g,2a), and Tyler Halls (2g,1a) but fell just short in this entertaining affair.

To The Game:

After almost half a period of scoreless play, Holden Patterson opened the scoring shorthanded for the Kodiaks off an Aaron Woods pass at 8:30. 

The North Stars came back with two power-play goals.  Xander Derkatz tied the game with a shot from in close off a Jackson Webster pass at 12:33, followed by Mitch Gustavsen with a low to low screen shot off a Mitch Wilde pass at 14:33.

Dustin Birkhof tied the game for the Kodiaks once again while being shorthanded off a loose ball pickup unassisted at 16:48.

Second Period:

The Kodiaks got off to a fast start in the second with two quick goals.  Nick Ellerton scored first off a nice feed from Dustyn Birkhof, followed by Holden Patterson with a laser from the outside off a Gareth Haigh pass at 1:43.

Jackson Webster answered with a pair of goals for the North Stars.   Tyler Halls sent Webster in for the first goal at 2:37, followed by a screenshot from the outside off a Jake McNabb feed at 3:09. Tyler Halls added one of his own 1:22 later and the North Stars took the lead again.

Jake Harrington tied the game again for Cobourg on a turnover unassisted at 7:11, but a power-play goal from Jake McNabb at 8:40 kept the see-saw battle ongoing.

The Kodiaks got on a three goal run in the second half of the period to gain control once again.  Zach Thompson converted a Gareth Haigh pass at 9:11, followed by Jack Bucknell in transition off a long lead pass from Jake Harrington at 12:24.  Holden Patterson then quick sticked an Alex Marinier pass at 14:08.

Jackson Webster got one back for Owen Sound with just 0:54 seconds left to bring the game within one goal.

Burnaby

Third Period:

The North Stars came out in the third on a mission, scoring three times to change the dynamic of the game.  

Jeremy Searle opened the scoring at 3:33, followed by a blast from Tyler Halls on the power-play at 6:38.  Jake McNabb  potted a power-play marker off a Xander Derkatz pass at 7:12.for a two goal lead.

Alex Marinier brought Cobourg within one goal with a low to low shot shorthanded off a Zach Thompson pass at 10:26, followed by Jeremi Phoenix with a great individual effort scoring unassisted at 12:49.

The remainder of the period saw end to end action, but both Andrew Kidd and Jackson Brown were outstanding in their respective nets, sending the game to overtime.

After regulation, Owen Sound 10 Cobourg 10.

Overtime:

Alex Marinier won the game for the Kodiaks with a shot from in close off an Aaron Woods pass at 2:42.

Final score, Cobourg 11 Owen Sound 10.

Shots on goal favored the North Stars 39-38.
