MIDDLESEX COUNTY, N.J. — Professional soccer is officially coming to Middlesex County, with New York City FC II set to begin a new chapter in New Jersey as part of a major MLS NEXT Pro initiative launching in July 2027.
Hometown Soccer Holdings, New York City FC, MLS NEXT Pro and Middlesex County officials announced Wednesday that NYCFC II will transition into a locally branded club playing at the new NEXUS sports and entertainment district.
Initially operating under the working name New Jersey MLS NEXT Pro, the club will eventually receive its own name, colors and crest designed to represent the local community. Fans will also have an opportunity to participate in developing the team’s new identity.
Despite the new branding, the club will remain NYCFC’s MLS NEXT Pro affiliate, with New York City FC continuing to oversee sporting operations and player development.
The move represents the first MLS NEXT Pro club relaunch under Hometown Soccer Holdings, the commercial platform created following the strategic partnership announced by MLS and investment firm KKR in April.
“This is exactly the kind of opportunity we envisioned when MLS partnered with KKR and Hometown Soccer Holdings to accelerate the growth of MLS NEXT Pro,” MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in the announcement.
New Stadium Will Give Club Its Own Home
The club will play at a new 6,500-seat stadium located within the $350 million NEXUS sports and entertainment district.
The venue will feature luxury-style suites, two upper-level party decks, a premium bar overlooking the field, an adjacent plaza and a grass hill with a playground designed for families and supporters.
The stadium is also located near NEXUS Fields at Thomas A. Edison Park, a 14-field youth tournament complex.
For NYCFC, the project creates an opportunity to give its developmental players a more distinct home and fanbase while maintaining the organization’s existing player pathway.
NYCFC CEO Brad Sims said having young professionals compete for a club with its own identity and dedicated supporters in a purpose-built stadium should help accelerate their development.
NYCFC Expanding Youth Development Into New Jersey
The partnership will extend beyond the professional team.
Middlesex County will become the second official NYCFC Youth Programs Regional Hub, joining LIU Post on Long Island.
Beginning in 2027, NYCFC Youth Programs plans to establish a youth soccer club in Middlesex County offering teams and supplemental programming for players between the ages of three and 18.
The programs will be based at NEXUS Fields and provide local players with exposure to NYCFC’s development pathway.
The combination gives the organization a significant new foothold in one of the country’s strongest youth soccer regions while bringing another professional soccer team to New Jersey.
Additional announcements regarding the stadium and the club’s permanent branding are expected later in 2026, ahead of its first match in July 2027.
