New York City FC has provided a positive medical update on two key members of its squad, confirming that midfielder Aiden O’Neill and defender Kai Trewin have both undergone successful ankle surgeries.

The club announced Wednesday that O’Neill underwent surgery on his left ankle while Trewin had a procedure performed on his right ankle earlier this week. Both operations were successful, and each player has already begun the rehabilitation process as they work toward returning to action.

The news comes after both Australians played significant roles for New York City FC throughout the 2026 campaign.

O’Neill has appeared in 11 Major League Soccer matches this season, contributing three assists while helping control the midfield for the Boys in Blue. His composure on the ball and ability to dictate play quickly made him an important part of Pascal Jansen’s squad.

Trewin has been one of NYCFC’s most dependable defensive options, making 18 appearances across all competitions. Along with providing two assists, the defender celebrated an important milestone earlier this season by scoring his first goal for the club during Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play.

Both players also represented Australia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, helping the Socceroos advance to the Round of 32. O’Neill was particularly influential during the tournament, earning Player of the Match honors following his standout performance against Paraguay.

While the club has not announced an expected timetable for either player’s return, the successful surgeries mark an important first step in their recovery. Beginning rehabilitation immediately gives both players the opportunity to focus on regaining full fitness while NYCFC navigates the second half of the MLS season.

Injuries are never welcome, particularly for players who have featured prominently for both club and country over the past several months. However, the positive update provides encouragement that both O’Neill and Trewin are on the road to recovery.

New York City FC supporters will now await further updates as the Australian internationals continue their rehabilitation with hopes of returning to the pitch as soon as medically possible.
