NEW YORK — New York City FC has reinforced one of its strongest positional groups, announcing contract extensions for veteran goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh and Tomás Romero, ensuring both players remain with the club through the 2027-28 season with club options for the 2028-29 campaign.
The back-to-back announcements demonstrate the club’s commitment to maintaining stability and depth behind starting goalkeeper Matt Freese as New York City enters the second half of the 2026 MLS season.
Ranjitsingh, 33, joined New York City FC in January 2025 after previous stops throughout Major League Soccer, MLS NEXT Pro and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. While his appearances have been limited since arriving in New York, the Canadian-born goalkeeper has earned praise for his professionalism and leadership within the squad.
Sporting Director Todd Dunivant emphasized that value when discussing the extension.
“Greg brings valuable experience and leadership to our goalkeeping unit. His impact in the locker room is felt on a daily basis, as he is a culture carrier for the team.”
Ranjitsingh has also represented Trinidad and Tobago internationally, earning a senior national team call-up during 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying before later being selected for the nation’s 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup roster.
The veteran expressed his appreciation for remaining with the club.
“Extending my contract with New York City FC means a lot to me. We have a special group here, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue being part of it.”
One day earlier, NYCFC announced a similar extension for Romero, a familiar face for local supporters. The Cherry Hill, New Jersey native arrived in February 2024 and has made six appearances across all competitions for the Boys in Blue, recording 17 saves while posting one clean sheet.
Romero’s most notable appearance this season came in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 32, where he made three saves in New York City’s 5-2 victory over Westchester SC.
Dunivant praised the 25-year-old’s continued development.
“Tomás is an important part of our goalkeeping unit, so it was always a priority to extend his contract. We’re excited to continue working with Tomás as we head into the second half of the season.”
Romero has also established himself internationally, earning 19 caps with the El Salvador Men’s National Team after making his debut in 2021. He has represented El Salvador in both the Concacaf Gold Cup and Concacaf Nations League.
For Romero, the extension represents both confidence from the organization and motivation moving forward.

With Matt Freese continuing to establish himself as one of MLS’ top goalkeepers, retaining experienced options like Ranjitsingh and developing talents such as Romero provides New York City FC with valuable depth at a critical position. As the club continues its push toward the MLS Cup Playoffs, the extensions offer continuity, experience and competition within one of the team’s most important position groups.
