New York City FC battled to a 1-1 draw against the New England Revolution on Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium, earning an important road point behind a memorable performance from goalkeeper Matt Freese and an equalizer from James Sands.
Playing in front of 30,055 fans in Foxborough, NYCFC entered the match looking to steady itself following consecutive losses to the Philadelphia Union and FC Cincinnati. The result moved New York City to 7-8-6 on the season and 3-4-3 away from home.
One of the defining moments arrived in the 27th minute when New England was awarded a penalty and Carles Gil stepped to the spot. Freese stopped Gil’s initial effort and then produced another save following the retake, keeping NYCFC alive.
New England eventually found its breakthrough, but NYCFC answered before halftime.
Sands, who had been involved in conceding the penalty, responded by scoring during first-half stoppage time. Talles Magno provided the assist for Sands’ first MLS goal of the 2026 season and first since returning to NYCFC in June.
The goal added another chapter to an unusual family occasion. James and New England defender Will Sands became the sixth set of brothers to start against each other in an MLS regular-season match and only the second set of twins to accomplish the feat.
Afterward, James joked that the 1-1 result meant the brothers could “split” the first meeting, while pointing toward their upcoming rematch at Yankee Stadium.
NYCFC Head Coach Pascal Jansen also made an unusually early tactical move, making a substitution in the 39th minute. Jansen explained afterward that while he was relatively pleased with his team’s possession, he was concerned with NYCFC’s defensive work in transition and felt the team needed immediate help.
Magno was then forced out at halftime after suffering an apparent muscle injury. Jansen said Magno grabbed the back of his leg following a first-half shot and that the extent of the injury would require further evaluation.
Neither side was able to find the winner during a more cautious second half.
For NYCFC, however, protecting the point carried additional importance following recent defeats. Jansen acknowledged that there came a stage when his team needed to recognize that a draw was the maximum available and make sure it returned to New York with something.
Sands echoed that sentiment, saying NYCFC has discussed the importance of finding ways to collect points even when a victory isn’t available.
“If we’re going to be a good team this year and make a deep run, we have to figure out how to pick up points in tough situations,” Sands said.
After a difficult stretch, NYCFC leaves Foxborough with a point — and perhaps something to build on as the MLS season continues.
