BRONX, N.Y. — New York City FC’s final regular-season match at Yankee Stadium ended in frustration Friday night as the Boys in Blue suffered a 1–0 defeat to Red Bull New York in front of 29,270 supporters.
NYCFC generated several promising opportunities throughout the Hudson River Derby but could not produce the finishing touch needed to earn a result. Instead, Julian Hall capitalized on an errant pass during the second half to score the match’s only goal and hand the visitors all three points.
The result left NYCFC ninth in the Eastern Conference with an 8-10-8 record and 32 points. The club has now recorded only one victory across its last 10 league matches as the race for postseason positioning continues.
Despite the defeat, NYCFC head coach Pascal Jansen rejected the suggestion that Hall’s winner resulted from another defensive breakdown.
“This is not a defensive mistake,” Jansen said. “This is a clear pass which goes wrong.”
Jansen acknowledged that the error was difficult to accept because of how well his side had otherwise performed. NYCFC created enough opportunities to change the game, with Luighi, Alonso Martínez and Tayvon Gray all coming close to scoring.
Luighi had one of City’s clearest chances during the second half but failed to direct his effort on target. Gray also produced a dangerous header that Jansen described as a “massive opportunity” to equalize.
“The looks are not enough,” Jansen said. “You have to put them in the back of the net.”
Martínez continued his return from the ACL injury he suffered in November 2025. Friday marked his first MLS regular-season appearance at Yankee Stadium since October 2025 after he returned to league action as a substitute against Real Salt Lake earlier in September.
Nico Fernández Mercau also reached a personal milestone by making his 50th appearance for NYCFC across all competitions.
The night carried additional significance as City Football Group global ambassador Pep Guardiola attended the match. Guardiola met with NYCFC players and staff before kickoff and participated in the club’s traditional pregame smokestacks ceremony.
Attention after the match quickly shifted toward NYCFC’s recent inconsistency. When asked about accountability for the team’s form, Jansen said he did not believe blame was the appropriate word.
“I’m responsible,” Jansen said. “That’s something different. There’s nobody to blame.”
Jansen pointed toward the club’s inability to field a consistent lineup as one factor behind its uneven season. However, he also acknowledged that NYCFC has repeatedly controlled games and created chances without converting those performances into victories.
Friday’s defeat was another example. The Boys in Blue produced the opportunities, but Red Bull New York delivered the only decisive moment.
For NYCFC, promising buildup and dangerous looks will offer little consolation. With the season entering its decisive stages, performances must now become points.
