Jansen pointed to maintaining focus for the full 90 minutes as a primary objective, noting that brief lapses in concentration have previously allowed opponents back into matches. While encouraged by the team’s recent progress, he wants New York City FC to eliminate those moments and establish a higher standard throughout every game.
The manager also offered praise for James Sands, who has transitioned seamlessly into central defense since returning from Germany. Jansen highlighted Sands’ adaptability and tactical understanding, explaining that the coaching staff has worked extensively through video sessions to help him maximize his strengths alongside Thiago Martins while still utilizing his natural midfield instincts.
NYCFC could soon receive another boost with Brazilian striker Luighi expected to become available for Leagues Cup action once his paperwork is finalized. Jansen described the 20-year-old as a technically gifted forward capable of bringing a different dimension to the attack, giving the club added flexibility in the No. 9 role.
Defender Nico Cavallo echoed his manager’s emphasis on consistency, crediting the squad’s depth and chemistry for helping the club navigate several injuries. Cavallo also praised his growing partnership with Malachi Jones on the left flank and said increased confidence has allowed him to play more freely while continuing to improve defensively.
With several injured players nearing returns and confidence building throughout the squad, NYCFC hopes to carry its positive form into Friday night’s meeting with Toronto FC at Yankee Stadium.
