The Riverhounds were back in action on their home pitch Saturday night in front of a crowd of 5,028 against the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Rowdies 2-8-2 Riverhounds 4-6-2. The Riverhounds kicked off a lengthy home stretch. The 8 of the next 10 are at home. The Riverhounds came out ” guns a blazing” in the first half, putting together long runs deep in the Rowdies zone. It paid off dividends as the Riverhounds drew first blood off a Robbie Mertz guided corner to the foot of Thomas Vancaeyezeele and in the back of the net at the 15th minute. Early quick scoring was the order of night as 5 minutes later off a Luke Biasi cross, Auggie Williams found the back of the net in the 20th minute.

To put the Riverhounds up 2-0. The Rowdies got one back in the 40th minute on a goal by Manuel Arteaga at the top of the box to finish the first half. In the second half, the Riverhounds showed what they’re mostly known for playing stingy defense. They held the Rowdies to zero shots on target and got the 2-1 victory. Coach Bob Lilley was pleased with the start but felt they took their foot off the gas to close out the first half by conceding a late goal. In the second half, he was pleased with their defensive approach but would have liked to see a third goal to put the game at bay. The Riverhounds are back home next week at Highmark on June 28th at 7:00 pm for a Jagermeister Cup match against Westchester SC.
