Coming off a 2-1 loss to rival Charleston Battery, the Riverhounds opened up the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 1-0 win against the number 1 team in the MLS eastern conference Columbus Crew. Midfielder Danny Griffin scored the lone goal in the 28th minute on an assist from Jorge Garcia. From that point on, the Riverhounds went into “Lockdown mode” from a defensive standpoint operating in their 4-2-3-1 formation and denying Columbus quality shots on goal. This was despite a 57% to 43% difference in possession. The Riverhounds will be away at Segra Field on Saturday April 19 at 4:30 pm facing Loudoun United FC.
