The Calgary Roughnecks traveled to Pechanga Arena to face the San Diego Seals on Saturday night in Week 6 action. The Roughnecks came into the game as the only winless team in the league (0-3), though three of their first four games have been on the road. Meanwhile, the Seals have been off for two weeks after a 15-7 drubbing in their home opener against Rochester. Calgary got nine-point nights from both Tanner Cook and Brayden Mayea as they notched their first win of the season, 15-11.

Roughnecks take lead in a chippy first half
Calgary quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals from Noah Manning (2:23 power play), Haiden Dickson (4:01), and Harrison Matsuoka (5:34). Corey Small scored on a power play (10:29) to get the Seals on the board, but Tyler Pace (13:26) restored a three-goal lead, 4-1 after one quarter of play.
The second quarter got even more chippy as a total of 28 penalty minutes were handed out. Dickson’s second (1:25 power play) made it 5-1 before Wes Berg (2:20 power play) scored for San Diego. After Tanner Cook (10:56) made it 6-2, Eli Gobrecht and Justin Inacio got into a fight on the ensuing faceoff, with both being assessed major penalties and several other players being sent off for minor infractions. Brayden Mayea (12:27 power play) extended the Roughnecks lead to 7-2 before Tre Leclaire (14:20 power play) and Berg (14:39) cut the deficit to 7-4 going into halftime.

Seals’ comeback not enough as Roughnecks earn first win of season
Dickson opened the third quarter with another power play goal (2:20) to make it 8-4. Pat Kavanagh responded for San Diego at 5:29, but Mayea’s second goal (9:18) made it 9-5 Roughnecks. The Seals then went on a four-goal run in a span of less than two minutes to tie the game. Leclaire (10:10), COnnor Robinson (11:33), Trevor Baptiste (11:40), and Leclaire again (11:54) leveled the game at 9-9. A second goal from Manning with 35 seconds left in the quarter put Calgary up 10-9 going into the fourth.
Cook found the net twice more (0:58; 2:22) on each side of another goal from Berg (1:14) to put the Roughnecks up 12-10. A power play goal from Riley Loewen (3:33) then made it 13-10. Matt Wright (6:52) closed the gap to 13-11, but the Seals offense went silent the rest of the way. Goals from Mayea (8:33) and Pace (11:51) closed the book on Calgary’s first win of the season. The Roughnecks (1-3) host Vancouver in Week 7, while the Seals (1-2) host Toronto.
