Shamrocks Win Goaltending Duel Against The Lakers

It was a goaltending duel on Friday night, but it was the Victoria Shamrocks who came away with a 6–5 win over the Burnaby Lakers in WLA action.

Chris Origlieri made 53 saves in the victory, while Keegan Melenychuk went toe-to-toe with 42 saves of his own.

The game was tied heading into the third period, but Victoria scored a pair of late goals to secure the win.

Zach Manns suited up for the first time in a Victoria Shamrocks uniform and finished with four assists. Marshal King followed with a goal and two assists.

Burnaby was led by Silas Richmond with three assists, while Ben Stewart tallied a pair of goals for the Lakers.

Shamrocks Open Up With the Lead

Victoria opened the scoring 4:35 into the game, with Mathieu Gautier finding the back of the net.

Off the ensuing draw, Colt Gnech got the ball to Patrick Kaschalk, who made it 2–0 for the Shamrocks just 11 seconds later.

Burnaby got on the board at 6:23, with Joel McCormick finding Sam La Roue to cut the lead in half.

Victoria rounded out the first-period scoring when Manns fed Clarke Petterson for a shorthanded marker at 9:39. The Shamrocks led 3–1 after the first.

Burnaby Comes Back to Tie It

The Lakers came out firing in the second period. Jack Charboneau scored on the power play 2:57 into the frame.

Stewart then found the back of the net at 3:28 to knot the game at three.

Victoria regained the lead at 8:01, with Marshal King scoring on the power play. But with 1:52 left in the period, Thomas Vela scored for the Lakers to tie it 4–4 heading into the third.

Goaltending Duel Ends With Shamrocks’ Victory

The goaltending duel continued into the third period, as neither team could break through until late in the frame.

Max Wilson scored unassisted for Victoria with 5:38 remaining to give the Shamrocks a one-goal lead.

Chris Wardle added an insurance marker a minute later to make it 6–4 for Victoria.

Burnaby mounted a late comeback attempt. Stewart scored with an extra attacker on the floor with 1:20 left, but the Lakers couldn’t find the equalizer as the Shamrocks came out on top, 6–5, in a goaltending duel.
