Six Nations Edges Brooklin In OT In An Absolutely Classic Spectacle

The Six Nations Chiefs (9-1) faced the Brooklin Lacrosse Club (7-3) Saturday night in Major Series Lacrosse action at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre in Whitby, Ontario.

The goaltending match-up had Warren Hill in net for the Chiefs facing Zach Higgins in net for Brooklin.

For forty five minutes, the Brooklin Lacrosse Club played the Six Nations Chiefs hard enough to put a “W” in their column.  However, for the majority of the third period the Chiefs rallied behind the sensational goaltending of Warren Hill (56 saves on 63 shots) pressuring Brooklin all period long.  Ian MacKay scored twice in the third period including a beauty from in close to tie the game at 17:00.

Not to be outdone, Zach Higgins was sensational in net for Brooklin time and again making huge saves both in regulation and in overtime, giving Brooklin every opportunity to win this game.  Higgins stopped 45 of 54 shots in the game. 

In overtime, after 7:36 of absolutely heart stopping, end to end action, Ryan Smith ended the game.  Converting a Dhane Smith pass, Ryan Smith beat Higgins low to the corner for the 8-7 victory.

To The Game:

Ryan Smith opened the scoring converting a Lyle Thompson pass from in front at 3:18, followed by Dhane Smith also converting a Lyle Thompson feed from the side of the net at 5:29.

Taggart Clark got Brooklin on the board with a low laser from mid-range off a Tanner Cook pass at 5:52, but Josh Byrne answered for Six  Nations with a sidearm snipe from the outside off a Larson Sundown pass at 9:52.

Brooklin got rolling later in the period with Tanner Cook scoring back to back goals just 0:25 seconds apart.  Cook’s first was from the outside on a screen shot at 13:14, followed by converting a Sean Westley pass at 13:49.

After one period, Brooklin 3 Six Nations 3.

Second Period:

This period Brooklin put together one of their best of the season.  Playing solid defense, while taking advantage of any Six Nations miscues.

Brady Kearnan opened the scoring for Brooklin with a low to low laser off a Tanner Cook pass at 1:59.

The teams battled for almost 15:00 with end to end action.  Both goaltender were outstanding not yielding anything.

Tanner Cook finally solved Warren Hill with a screenshot off a Luke Keenan pass at 17:07, followed by Connor Kearnan with a sidearm rocket to the top corner off a  Brady Kearnan feed at 18:21.

After two periods, Brooklin 7 Six Nations 4.

Lakers

Third Period:

Dhane Smith opened the third period scoring quickly.  Converting a Josh Ricci pass shorthanded at 0:11 seconds put the swagger back in the Chiefs step.  Taggart Clark then restored the three goal lead on the same power-play off a Connor Kearnan feed at 1:34. 

Ian MacKay answered with a great move from in front of the net to score at 4:02, followed by Ryan Smith with his second of the game off a Josh Byrne pass at 4:56, making this a one goal game.

After twelve absolutely heart stopping minutes of chances and opportunities from both teams, Ian MacKay finally tied the game with another great move from in front off a Josh Byrne pass at 17:00.

Both teams had chances to get the game winner in regulation, but the play of Zach Higgins and Warren Hill in their respective nets was stellar.

After regulation time, Six Nations 7 Brooklin 7.

Overtime:

End to end action continued to be the order of the day.  Both teams showed prowess and creativity, but Hill and Higgins continually were up to the task.

Ryan Smith finally ended the game with an in close shot off a beautiful set up from Dhane Smith at 7:36.

Final score, Six Nations 8 Brooklin 7.
Shots on goal favored Brooklin 63-56
