USMNT Closes Perfect Fall Window With 1-0 Victory Over Canada

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The United States Men’s National Team completed a perfect fall international window Tuesday night, defeating Canada 1-0 at Allianz Field behind Justin Ellis’ second international goal and a strong defensive performance.

The victory gave Mauricio Pochettino’s squad its fourth consecutive win and second straight clean sheet, completing a four-match stretch in which the Americans scored 12 goals, introduced 13 players to senior international soccer and featured seven different goalscorers.

For a team beginning its journey toward the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the results offered an encouraging early glimpse at the next generation of the USMNT.

Ellis Strikes Again

After scoring against Peru earlier in the window, Orlando City SC teenager Justin Ellis provided the decisive moment against Canada in the 29th minute.

Malik Tillman helped create the opportunity with a combination down the right side with Alex Freeman. Freeman carried the ball toward goal before delivering across the face of the Canadian defense, where Ellis arrived at the far post and finished past Dayne St. Clair.

The goal was Ellis’ second in his first USMNT window and continued an impressive stretch for the Americans’ young attackers.

Canada provided a much more physical test than the United States faced in some of its previous fall matches. The Canadians committed 13 fouls in the opening half, while the U.S. remained patient and largely avoided being pulled out of its game.

George Campbell produced one of the biggest defensive plays of the first half, blocking a dangerous Canadian opportunity inside the six-yard box in the 24th minute.

Schwake Delivers Clean Sheet

With Pochettino continuing to evaluate his player pool, Nashville SC goalkeeper Brian Schwake made his first international start and became the fourth different U.S. goalkeeper to start during the window.

Schwake responded with three saves and his first USMNT clean sheet.

His biggest came following a Canadian free kick in the second half. Luc de Fougerolles connected with a strike toward goal, but Schwake stretched to get a glove on the shot and pushed it onto the crossbar.

Canada continued pushing for an equalizer as the match entered its final stages, but Chris Richards, Auston Trusty and the American defense protected the advantage.

Richards captained the United States for the fourth time, while he and Trusty helped anchor a back line that also shut out Mexico 3-0 on Saturday.

Pochettino Praises USMNT Mentality

Afterward, Pochettino emphasized that the significance of the four-match window went beyond the perfect record.

The head coach praised his players for maintaining their intensity and commitment despite playing four matches in two weeks while traveling between Orlando, St. Louis, Arizona and Minnesota. He described the window as a starting point for building the team’s identity moving forward.

That mentality was tested against a physical Canadian side.

Pochettino noted that Canada entered Tuesday having played fewer matches during the stretch, while the United States continued rotating heavily. Despite those changes, he felt the team’s competitive level remained intact.

Young USMNT Takes Another Step

The night also produced another milestone when 20-year-old Cole Campbell entered in the 61st minute to earn his first senior international appearance.

His debut meant all 28 players selected for the window appeared in at least one match, while all 13 players who entered camp without a senior cap ultimately made their USMNT debut.

Pochettino cautioned that earning the first cap is only the beginning.

He stressed that the next challenge will be supporting and developing those players while making them understand the additional responsibility that comes with becoming an international. Pochettino believes combining that emerging talent with the team’s established veterans could give the United States a strong foundation moving forward.

Yunus Musah also reached a significant milestone, earning his 50th cap at just 24 years old, while Freeman extended his streak to 24 consecutive USMNT appearances and recorded the match-winning assist.

The victory snapped a two-match losing streak against Canada and improved the United States to 4-0-0 all-time at Allianz Field.

More importantly, the Americans leave the fall with four wins, 12 goals, two clean sheets and an expanded player pool.

The experimentation now gives way to competitive soccer.

The USMNT returns in November for a home-and-home Concacaf Nations League quarterfinal against Haiti, beginning Nov. 14 before the return leg Nov. 17 at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati.

After a perfect fall, Pochettino’s next task is turning a promising beginning into sustained progress.
