MEXICO CITY — The United States Under-19 Men’s National Team’s run through the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Men’s Championship ended one victory short of the title Sunday night, as a 10-man American side fell 2-0 to Mexico before 36,000 fans at Estadio Azteca.
Cristóbal Alfaro scored both goals for Mexico, while a first-half red card to U.S. captain Chris Applewhite left the Americans playing shorthanded for the entire second half.
Despite the defeat, Gonzalo Segares‘ squad leaves Mexico having accomplished two major objectives, securing qualification for both the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup and 2027 Pan American Games.
Sunday’s championship match was a rematch of the 2024 final and marked the United States’ fifth consecutive appearance in the Concacaf U-20 title game.
Mexico Strikes Before Crucial Red Card
The rivals traded spells of possession during a competitive opening before Mexico found its breakthrough in the 28th minute.
Cristian Inda, a late addition to Mexico’s starting lineup, delivered a free kick toward the far post. Captain Carlos Hernández redirected the ball toward goal, where Alfaro managed to guide it across the line despite efforts from Colin Guske and goalkeeper Kayne Rizvanovich.
VAR confirmed the entire ball had crossed the goal line, putting Mexico ahead 1-0.
The complexion of the match changed dramatically just before halftime.
Applewhite initially received a yellow card following a sliding challenge on Hugo Camberos. After a VAR review, referee Adonis Carrasco upgraded the decision to a red card after determining Applewhite was the last defender and had denied a goalscoring opportunity.
That left the Americans facing the daunting prospect of chasing Mexico at Estadio Azteca with only 10 players.
Rather than retreat, the U.S. continued creating opportunities after halftime.
Jaidyn Contreras won a one-on-one battle in the 58th minute and delivered a dangerous ball that required a scrambling clearance. Shortly afterward, Rubén Ramos won another duel in the attacking third before setting up Din Klapija, whose attempt sailed narrowly over the crossbar.
Mexico finally gave itself breathing room in the 69th minute.
Inda delivered a corner that escaped Rizvanovich’s reach and dropped inside the six-yard box, where Alfaro headed home his second goal of the night.
Americans Leave Mexico With World Cup Berth
The 2-0 result represented a disappointing conclusion to an otherwise impressive tournament for the United States.
The Americans allowed just three goals across six matches while earning qualification for two major international competitions.
The U.S. has now finished runner-up in consecutive Concacaf U-20 Championships after Mexico also captured the 2024 final, ending an American run of three straight championships in 2017, 2018 and 2022.
Mexico also secured Concacaf’s available berth in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics through its tournament victory. The United States is already qualified for the Olympic tournament as host nation.
For Segares and his young squad, the trophy ultimately remained in Mexico City, but their tournament produced something that will matter considerably beyond Sunday night: another opportunity to represent the United States on the world stage in 2027.
