The Washington Spirit continued their impressive 2026 NWSL campaign on Saturday night, earning a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Denver Summit FC at Audi Field. Sofia Cantore’s second-half goal proved to be the difference as the Spirit claimed all three points and completed a season sweep of the expansion side.
Entering the match with one of the league’s top records, Washington improved to 10-3-3 (33 points), while Denver dropped to 5-6-4 (19 points) despite another determined defensive performance.
The opening 45 minutes showcased Denver’s resilience. Although Washington controlled stretches of possession, the Summit remained organized defensively and frustrated one of the NWSL’s most dangerous attacking teams. The scoreless first half marked only the fifth time this season that the Spirit had been held without a goal through the opening 45 minutes.
For Denver, reaching halftime level had become a positive sign throughout the season. The Summit entered the contest unbeaten in their previous four matches when tied at halftime and had conceded just one second-half goal in those situations all year.
Washington’s breakthrough finally came shortly after the hour mark.
In the 61st minute, Italian international Sofia Cantore found the decisive goal, breaking the deadlock and giving the Spirit a 1-0 advantage. The strike was enough to secure Washington’s third 1-0 victory of the season and highlighted the club’s ability to grind out results even when scoring opportunities were limited.
Denver showed attacking intent throughout the evening, recording 35 touches inside Washington’s penalty area—matching the club’s second-highest total of the season. However, the Summit struggled to convert promising build-up play into quality chances, managing just one shot on target for the second time all year.
Washington’s defensive organization ensured that Denver rarely tested goalkeeper Sandy MacIver despite consistently working the ball into dangerous areas.
At the opposite end of the field, Denver goalkeeper Abby Smith delivered another standout performance. The veteran recorded five saves, marking the fourth time this season she has reached that total or better. Smith’s efforts kept the Summit within striking distance for much of the evening and prevented Washington from extending its advantage.
One bright spot for Denver continued to be the emergence of rookie defender Devin Lynch. Lynch remained one of only two rookies across the NWSL to start every match this season and once again demonstrated her consistency, leaving the pitch only in the closing minutes after another composed defensive display.
The physical nature of the contest increased during the second half as Denver accumulated three yellow cards. Ayo Oke received the first caution in the 55th minute before Eva Gaetino and Natalie Means were booked later in the match while attempting to disrupt Washington’s attack.
Despite the defeat, Denver can draw encouragement from another disciplined defensive performance against one of the league’s elite clubs. Limiting the Spirit to a single goal on the road while remaining competitive for more than an hour reflects the continued progress of the expansion side as it pushes toward the second half of its inaugural NWSL season.
For Washington, the victory reinforces its position among the league’s top contenders. Grinding out a narrow result against a well-organized opponent demonstrated the Spirit’s maturity and ability to collect valuable points even when matches do not become high-scoring affairs.
With the playoff race beginning to intensify, both clubs will now shift their attention to their next league fixtures as Washington looks to maintain its place near the top of the standings and Denver aims to turn another encouraging performance into points.
