For many fans, comic conventions are an opportunity to meet the actors and creators who shaped their childhoods. For actor and writer Wesley Eure, however, those events have become something much more meaningful.
Best known for portraying Will Marshall on Land of the Lost and later co-creating the beloved PBS series Dragon Tales, Eure says the greatest reward isn’t signing autographs—it’s the relationships that continue to grow decades after his most recognizable work first aired.
“When people talk about conventions, they usually focus on meeting their heroes,” Eure explained. “But we get to meet people too. We make friendships and create relationships. That’s one of the greatest joys about doing these conventions.”
That connection extends well beyond nostalgia.
During the interview, Eure reflected on a memorable encounter with a young nonverbal fan who approached his table at a convention after seeing Dragon Tales merchandise. When Eure began singing the show’s theme song, the fan joined in—leaving the individual’s handler in tears after hearing the young person speak for the first time.
“It’s moments like that you never forget,” Eure said, noting that stories like these remind him how deeply children’s programming can affect families long after the cameras stop rolling.
Eure has experienced similar emotional encounters with fans of Land of the Lost. One visitor told him that watching the series helped provide hope after losing his father as a child, showing him that families could survive even after unimaginable loss. Those personal stories, Eure says, have become among the most meaningful parts of attending conventions.
The actor also reflected on the surprising longevity of his career. More than 50 years after Land of the Lost premiered and 25 years after Dragon Tales debuted, new generations continue discovering both series. He credits strong storytelling and memorable characters for their enduring popularity.
Rather than viewing conventions simply as autograph sessions, Eure sees them as opportunities to reconnect with longtime fans while introducing classic television to younger audiences discovering these shows for the first time.
For an actor whose career has spanned children’s television, soap operas, game shows, and animation, those conversations have become one of the most rewarding chapters of all.
