The Riverhounds traveled to Louisville looking to build on the momentum from their midweek 1-0 victory over NYCFC, while Louisville aimed to extend their impressive 12-game home unbeaten streak.
The first half proved to be a defensive battle, with both teams holding strong at the back. The Hounds were tested early on; a set piece deep in their own end, but defended it well. In the 8th minute, MF Robbie Mertz connected with a cross from D Perrin Barnes, directing a header on goal that was saved by Louisville GK Damian Lass. The early pace of the match seemed to favor the Riverhounds.
Louisville responded with two quality chances. The first came in the 11th minute following a poor Hounds giveaway, which led to a corner. Then in the 20th minute, Pittsburgh GK Eric Dick was called into action and made a solid save to keep the match level. As the half progressed, Louisville continued to press and nearly broke through in the 41st minute, but Dick once again came up big with a save. The Riverhounds had a promising chance of their own just before the break when F Augie Williams latched onto a long ball from MF Danny Griffin. Williams found himself in a one-on-one situation with Lass, but too many touches allowed the defense to recover and the chance went begging.
The first half ended scoreless at 0-0.The second half started with Louisville making 3 substitutions, as they increased their pressure higher up the field. The Hounds responded by forcing the play outside and taking away the middle of the field while waiting patiently to counter attack. In the 55th minute Louisville conceded a corner to the Hounds; Mertz sent in the corner and it easily defended and cleared. In the 63rd minute, the Hounds created a fast break and again Griffin to Williams didn’t produce a goal. In the 65th minute, Dick came up with another quality save from a Louisville shot. The Hounds brought on two substitutions in the 74th minute and Louisville brought on one. With fifteen minutes remaining and the pace picking up, it was clear both teams were looking to secure the victory. Another break away for Williams was his best opportunity of the match. He came in down the right side and Lass responded with a great save. A dangerous free kick for Louisville in the 84th minute could have decided the game, but the Hounds wall did its job. One last set piece, late in the match for Louisville could have look dangerous for the Hounds, but GK Dick came up big again. With 22 total shots total, neither team was able to score, and the game ended 0-0. The Hounds earned a hard point on the road and head to Colorado Springs next week.
