The Riverhounds Shutout DCFC 2-0 For Their Second Win In A RowThe Pittsburgh Riverhounds entered the match on a two-game unbeaten streak in USL Championship play, looking to build momentum. The game opened with a cautious tone, as both sides attempted to establish control and possession in the early minutes.The Hounds’ first real opportunity came in the 17th minute, when M Robbie Mertz earned a free kick from 25 yards out. Mertz curled the ball across the box, but it was deflected out for a corner by the defense. Just two minutes later, M Jackson Walti fired a shot from outside the box, but it was directed straight at the goalkeeper and safely handled.

Pittsburgh continued to push forward, and in the 29th minute, they earned another set piece opportunity, but the DCFC defense was up to the task once again. The sustained pressure finally paid off in the 37th minute when Mertz delivered a pinpoint cross into the box. D Perrin Barnes rose to meet it, heading home the opening goal, his first for the Hounds and the first of his professional career.

DCFC struggled to respond, as the Hounds kept up the intensity, pressing until the halftime whistle. The teams went into the break with the Riverhounds leading 1-0. The second half began with a substitution for DCFC, as midfielder Cecil Cedeno replaced forward Ben Morris. The Hounds’ defense picked up right where they left off in the first half, applying relentless pressure on Detroit’s attack. This defensive intensity helped spark the Hounds’ offense. In the 53rd minute, M Danny Griffin fired a shot from inside the box that sailed just left of the goal. The pressure paid off in the 66th minute, when Robbie Mertz netted his 20th career goal for the Hounds, finishing a well-placed cross from D Perrin Barnes. Just three minutes later, Detroit responded with a wave of fresh substitutions in an effort to revitalize their attack and get back into the match.

Detroit made two more substitutions in hopes of sparking some late drama and finally managed their first and only shot on goal in the 80th minute. Despite holding a two-goal advantage, the Hounds continued to press forward offensively, maintaining control and pressure until the final whistle. Their efforts were rewarded with a convincing 2-0 shutout victory. The Hounds look to maintain the momentum as they head in to play the Indy Eleven on the road next Saturday.
