Playoffs Week 1

“Muffler” Mike Kostiuk:

Halifax vs. Vancouver

Vancouver. Two teams that desperately need to show more than just “making the playoffs”. Their meeting two weeks ago was a nail biter – I expect the same type of game, with the Warriors escaping again with a narrow victory.

Buffalo vs. Georgia

Georgia. These two teams are not the same ones that met in Week 1. Brett Dobson has had an historic year, and I think he is primed to pass the biggest test of all in shutting down the relentless Bandits offense to end their quest for a championship four-peat.

San Diego vs. Colorado

Colorado. I’m torn on this one, because San Diego generally gets off to quick starts while the Mammoth sometimes have difficulty playing from behind. However, it’s tough to ignore Colorado’s 7-2 record at home, which tied for the league best.

Toronto vs. Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan. It’s tough to ignore that Saskatchewan is also 7-2 at home. Toronto may have controlled most of last week’s game, but I feel that the Rush will apply lessons learned so as not to allow the Rock to handle them the same way as last week.

Shawn Slaght:

Halifax vs Vancouver

Pick – Vancouver

The championship pedigree on this Vancouver team is through the roof. If Halifax wants a chance to win, they are going to have to play a near-perfect game. You also can’t count out Christian Del Bianco in a one-and-done game.

Buffalo vs Georgia

Pick – Buffalo

As much as Brett Dobson had a record-setting year, I have a hard time picking against Matt Vinc in a winner-take-all game. I’m expecting another low-scoring game that could come down to the last minute.

San Diego vs Colorado

Pick – Colorado

Could this be an upset? Possibly. However, I think there is a bit more firepower on Colorado’s side, and I’ve seen a bit more consistency out of Dillon Ward compared to Chris Origlieri.

Toronto vs Saskatchewan

Pick – Saskatchewan

I’m going with experience over youth. Hiltz, Kirst, English, etc., are very good players, but this is their first playoffs, and it’s a different animal. Neither team really impressed last weekend, but if the Rush play to their potential, they can come away with the win.

Gary Groob:

Halifax vs Vancouver

Vancouver wins.

The Warriors have been preparing all season for this!  They are built for high pace, high action.  The Thunderbirds, while playing better, aren’t ready for this high octane adventure.

Buffalo vs Georgia

Georgia wins.

TheSwarm have the best GAA in the league, and the scoring has come around over the last few weeks.  They are young and hungry.  There is no debating how great Buffalo has been, however, a long season, injuries, and age is catching up.  This will be close, but I give the home team the slight advantage.

San Diego vs Colorado

San Diego wins.

San Diego has been strong on defense all year, but recently all the scoring has come alive as well.  For Colorado, either you get white hot, or ice cold.  Who shows up this week?

Toronto vs Saskatchewan

Toronto wins.

The Rock should have beat the Rush last week, but defensive breakdowns with under two minutes left had them lose a winnable game.  That would have swept the series.  Toronto matches up well, and can even out run Saskatchewan.  Look for this to be close, but the Rock win late.

Warriors

Pat Bernard:

Halifax vs Vancouver

Vancouver Warriors

Buffalo vs Georgia

Buffalo Bandits

San Diego vs Colorado

Colorado Mammoth

Toronto vs Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan Rush

Caden Balint:

Halifax vs Vancouver

I’m leaning Halifax here—they’ve been a tough out at home and tend to dictate pace better than Vancouver when things get physical. Vancouver can score in bursts, but Halifax usually does a better job shutting the door late. Feels like a grind-it-out win for the Thunderbirds.

Buffalo vs Georgia

Hard to go against Buffalo—they’re just deeper and more consistent top to bottom. Georgia can absolutely hang if their offense gets rolling early, but Buffalo’s ability to control possessions usually swings these matchups. I’d take the Bandits in a fairly high-scoring game.

San Diego vs Colorado

This one’s sneaky, but I like San Diego. They’ve got a more balanced attack, and when their defense is locked in, they can frustrate Colorado’s shooters. If the Seals get even average goaltending, they should edge this.

Toronto vs Saskatchewan

I’m going Saskatchewan—they play with a bit more edge and tend to capitalize on mistakes better than Toronto. The Rock are solid, but they sometimes struggle to keep up when the pace ramps up. Rush in a close one, probably decided late.
