Owen Rahn Scores Five as Salmonbellies Down Thunder

Owen Rahn had five goals and seven points to lead the New Westminster Salmonbellies to an 8-6 win over the Langley Thunder in WLA action on Wednesday night.

After a scoreless first period, New Westminster trailed 5-3 after the second. The Salmonbellies rebounded to outscore Langley 5-1 in the final frame to pick up the win.

New Westminster moves to 2-2 in the standings, while the Thunder drop to 1-4.

Between the pipes, Frank Scigliano saw his first action in goal for the Thunder and stopped 40 of 48 shots in the loss. Ashton Leclaire picked up the win for the Salmonbellies, making 37 saves on 43 shots.

For Langley, all six goals came from just three players, as Trevayne Hunter, Connor Watson and Jon Phillips scored twice each.

First Period

The game started with a goaltending clinic between Scigliano and Leclaire.

Scigliano stopped all 11 shots he faced, while Leclaire was just as good, stopping all 19 shots he faced as the teams were tied 0-0 after 20 minutes of play.

Second Period

New Westminster broke the stalemate 2:58 into the second period, with Owen Rahn scoring his first of the game.

Langley responded with a four-goal run. Hunter started it off with an assist from Nathaniel Kozevnikov at 7:31. Watson then gave the Thunder the lead just 17 seconds later.

Hunter tallied another goal, unassisted, at 8:18 to put the Thunder up 3-1 before Phillips rounded out the run at 11:01.

Noah Armitage found the back of the net for New Westminster with 2:45 left on the clock, and Lukas Nielsen scored with 1:15 remaining to make it a one-goal game.

With an extra attacker on the floor, Watson scored unassisted with 46 seconds left as the Thunder led 5-3 after the second period.

Third Period

The Salmonbellies came storming back early in the third period. Owen Rahn opened the scoring at 1:25 and scored again at 6:05 to tie the game 5-5.

Off the ensuing draw, Blake Bosak won the faceoff and got the ball to Ben Soenen, who scored to give New Westminster a 6-5 lead.

Owen Rahn capped a four-goal run for the Salmonbellies with a goal off an assist from Armitage at 13:38 to make it 7-5.

Langley got back within one on the power play with 5:05 left to play as Phillips scored to make it 7-6.

However, Owen Rahn scored his fifth of the game with 1:15 left to make the final 8-6.
