The Pittsburgh Riveters’ memorable 2026 season came to a heartbreaking conclusion Sunday night, as top-seeded Minnesota Aurora FC scored deep into stoppage time to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory in the USL W League Central Conference Final at F.N.B. Stadium.

For the second consecutive season, the Riveters saw their playoff run end against the undefeated Aurora, who improved to a perfect 14-0-0 and advanced after another tightly contested postseason battle. Pittsburgh finished an outstanding campaign at 10-1-1, cementing itself as one of the final eight teams remaining in the league.

Minnesota struck first in the 18th minute when Flavie Dubé combined with Jeanette Fieldsend on a well-worked give-and-go before finishing from close range. The Riveters nearly answered eight minutes later, but Ellen Molloy’s effort rattled the crossbar.

Molloy would not be denied for long.

In the 37th minute, the Irish midfielder delivered one of the goals of the postseason, curling a spectacular left-footed free kick from nearly 30 yards into the top corner to level the match. The stunning strike was only the second goal Minnesota had conceded all season and sent the teams into halftime tied at 1-1.

Pittsburgh came out aggressively after the break, creating several quality opportunities. Sabrina Bryan forced an early save from goalkeeper Taylor Fox, while Taylor Green came inches away from giving the Riveters the lead with a header that found the side netting. At the opposite end, goalkeeper Lexi Grundler produced a key save on Skye Leach to keep the match level heading into stoppage time.

With extra time seemingly moments away, Minnesota found its breakthrough. Dubé drove into the penalty area before picking out Gracie Dunaway, who redirected the cross home from close range in the third minute of stoppage time to break Pittsburgh hearts.

Molloy earned Hitachi Player of the Match honors after her brilliant equalizer and another commanding midfield performance. She finished her Riveters campaign with four goals and three assists.

Despite the painful ending, Pittsburgh’s second season established the club as one of the USL W League’s elite sides, reaching the Central Conference Final and pushing the league’s only unbeaten team to the final whistle.
