Denver Summit officially welcomed hometown star Lindsey Heaps on Wednesday, introducing the decorated U.S. international as the club’s newest signing. During her introductory press conference, Heaps spoke passionately about returning to Colorado, embracing the opportunity to play professionally in her home state, and helping establish a winning culture for the NWSL expansion club.

For Heaps, the move represents the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. The Golden, Colorado native admitted that the experience of driving to training in her home state still feels surreal after spending years competing at the highest levels of club and international soccer.

“It’s such a grateful feeling,” Heaps said. “I’m just so happy to be here.”

The veteran midfielder reflected on the journey that began in local youth soccer, crediting her mother as both her first coach and one of the biggest influences throughout her career. From coaching her first teams to traveling across the country for tournaments, Heaps described her mother as the foundation of the career that eventually led to World Cup success and now back home to Colorado.

Heaps also praised the competitive youth soccer culture throughout Colorado, saying the state’s strong club environment helped develop countless players who have gone on to succeed in the NWSL and with national teams. She believes that same competitive spirit is something Denver Summit hopes to build into its identity.

After spending several seasons overseas, Heaps noted how much the NWSL has evolved, highlighting improved tactical play, increased investment, and the arrival of internationally respected coaches. She specifically pointed to head coach Nick Cushing’s experience as one of the major reasons she chose Denver, saying she still wants to grow as a player despite everything she has already accomplished.

While she is still getting acclimated to her new teammates, Heaps emphasized that leadership is one of the primary responsibilities she brings to the club. She said her goal is to raise the standard every day while working alongside existing leaders such as Janine Beckie to continue building the club’s culture rather than replacing it.

Heaps also expressed confidence in Summit’s long-term future, acknowledging the challenges every expansion team faces while making it clear that her expectations remain unchanged.

“I know this is going to be a winning club,” she said.

Unable to make her debut until later this month, Heaps plans to contribute immediately through leadership, preparation, and mentorship before taking the field. When she finally does make her home debut—coincidentally against her former club, the Portland Thorns—she expects it to be an emotional moment surrounded by family and the Colorado supporters who have waited years to see one of their own return home.
