With Major League Soccer temporarily on pause, New York City FC now shifts its attention to Leagues Cup, where head coach Pascal Jansen believes a fast start will be critical.
Speaking ahead of Thursday’s opening match against Liga MX side Santos Laguna, Jansen said the condensed tournament schedule leaves little margin for error.
“We’re looking forward to this tournament,” Jansen said. “Three games in six days will determine, hopefully, that we’ll be in the tournament for a very long time.”
Lessons Learned From Last Year’s Tournament
Jansen reflected on NYCFC’s Leagues Cup debut in 2025, when the club opened with a disappointing 3-0 loss before rebounding to reach the knockout stage.
While he didn’t point to one defining tactical adjustment, he stressed that avoiding early mistakes will be essential this time around.
He recalled his side conceding from self-inflicted errors before responding well later in the match, creating several quality scoring opportunities that ultimately went unfinished.
For Jansen, the biggest takeaway remains simple: begin the competition with a victory.
Respect for Liga MX Competition
Asked about the differences between MLS and Liga MX clubs, Jansen noted that Mexican teams often play at a different rhythm, though appearances can be deceiving.
He expects another highly competitive tournament after experiencing several tightly contested matches against Liga MX opposition last season.
Turning specifically to Santos Laguna, Jansen acknowledged their recent league defeat but cautioned against reading too much into domestic form entering a knockout-style tournament.
With a trophy on the line, he expects both clubs to bring maximum intensity in Thursday’s opener.
Injury Update
NYCFC will be without captain Thiago Martins after the defender suffered what Jansen described as a minor strain.
There was more encouraging news elsewhere in the squad, however.
Kevin O’Toole has returned, while midfielder Keaton Parks has resumed full training, giving NYCFC additional depth heading into one of the busiest stretches of its season.
Jansen added that several players recovering from longer-term injuries remain unavailable but continue progressing through rehabilitation.
A Call for the Blue Faithful
Jansen also made a direct appeal to supporters ahead of the club’s opening Leagues Cup fixture at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
Recalling the atmosphere generated by NYCFC fans during previous cup matches, he encouraged supporters to once again turn the venue blue.
“Put on your blue shirt and drive to Jersey and be with us,” Jansen said, emphasizing the difference an energized crowd can make during an international competition.
As NYCFC begins another Leagues Cup campaign, Jansen believes avoiding an early stumble and capitalizing on home support could set the tone for a deep tournament run.
