The victory not only sends the Americans into the tournament semifinals, but also secures qualification for both the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan and the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. The United States will now face Costa Rica on Aug. 7 at historic Estadio Azteca with a place in the tournament final on the line.
The U.S. Under-19 Men’s National Team showed championship resilience Tuesday night, overcoming its first deficit of the tournament to defeat Guatemala 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2026 CONCACAF U-20 Championship in Puebla, Mexico.
For the first time during this tournament, the U.S. found itself trailing after Guatemala capitalized on a dangerous attack in the 36th minute. Marvin Avila burst down the right side before rattling the crossbar with a powerful strike. The rebound fell perfectly to Oscar De Leon, whose header gave Guatemala a surprising 1-0 advantage.Rather than panic, Gonzalo Segares’ squad responded with composure.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, defender Brandon Dayes sparked the equalizer with determination. After battling to keep possession alive and earning a corner kick, Xanty Oyharçabal delivered an excellent service into the penalty area. Christopher Cupps redirected the ball into traffic before Dayes reacted quickest, firing home from close range to level the match at 1-1 just before halftime.
The goal dramatically shifted momentum.The United States emerged after the break playing with greater urgency, consistently pinning Guatemala in its own half while creating wave after wave of scoring opportunities. Several chances narrowly missed the target or struck the woodwork before the breakthrough finally arrived in the 68th minute.
Forward Jaidyn Contreras beat his defender along the end line before delivering a perfectly weighted pass across the face of goal. Din Klapija calmly finished the opportunity, giving the Americans their first lead of the night. The goal marked Klapija’s third of the tournament, tying Ruben Ramos for the team lead.
The U.S. continued to dictate possession and effectively put the match away seven minutes later.
Ruben Ramos threaded an outstanding through ball into the path of Joshua Torquato, who timed his run perfectly before finishing with a composed left-footed strike to extend the advantage to 3-1.
Despite Guatemala’s spirited opening half, the Americans dominated the statistical battle, outshooting their opponents 17-9 while holding a 5-3 advantage in shots on target. Guatemala failed to earn a corner kick throughout the contest as the U.S. defense settled after conceding the tournament’s first goal.The semifinal now shifts to one of world soccer’s most iconic venues as the United States prepares to face Costa Rica at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Beyond a trip to the championship match, the tournament winner will earn CONCACAF’s automatic berth to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Since the United States has already qualified as Olympic host, an American tournament title would instead send the runner-up to Los Angeles.
After surviving its toughest challenge of the competition, the U.S. enters the semifinals with momentum, confidence, and its primary objective already accomplished: returning to the FIFA U-20 World Cup while keeping hopes of a CONCACAF championship very much alive.
