Denver Summit FC battled back from a halftime deficit to earn a 1-1 draw against San Diego Wave on Friday night at Snapdragon Stadium, securing another valuable road point in its inaugural season.
San Diego opened the scoring in the 35th minute when Melanie Barcenas broke through a Denver defense that had kept the Wave quiet for much of the opening half. The goal sent the Summit into halftime trailing 1-0 after Denver managed just two shots during the first 45 minutes.
The visitors responded after the break.
In the 58th minute, defender Janine Sonis delivered a well-placed ball into the box that Yazmeen Ryan headed home for the equalizer. Ryan’s fifth goal of the season tied her single-season career high, previously set with Gotham in 2024, while increasing her total to eight goal contributions.
Ryan has now scored in consecutive matches for the first time since 2023 after also finding the net against Utah on August 8.
Sonis recorded her fourth assist of the season and increased her team-leading goal contribution total to 12. The equalizer was also the first second-half goal San Diego has conceded at home this season.
Goalkeeper Abby Smith reached a milestone during the match, becoming the 12th goalkeeper in league history to record 300 regular-season saves. Smith finished with four saves, bringing her career total to 302.
Denver used the same starting lineup that earned a 2-1 victory over Utah, with Ally Brazier playing the full 90 minutes for the first time this season.
The result moved Denver to 6-7-6 with 24 points while San Diego moved to 10-7-3 with 33. It also continued Denver’s success away from home, where the Summit have scored 13 of their 25 goals and earned 12 of their 24 points this season.
For San Diego, the result marked the Wave’s first home draw of the season.
