The Halifax Thunderbirds (4-7) visited the Calgary Roughnecks (2-9) in NLL action Saturday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta.
Both teams have struggled this year. The difference is the Roughnecks have been rebuilding, while the Thunderbirds were expected to do great things this season.
Led by Captain Cody Jamieson, Halifax is a very dangerous team. With Clarke Petterson, Randy Staats, Jason Knox, Brendan Bomberry, Stephen Keogh, and Graham Hossack, the Thunderbirds can beat you in many ways.
The Calgary Roughnecks have had production from a very young lineup consisting of Noah Manning, Braydon Mayea, Tanner Cook, Tyler Pace, Haiden Dickson, and Kyle Pepper.
The goaltending match-up had Warren Hill in net for the Thunderbirds facing Aden Walsh in net for the Roughnecks.
The first half was played very evenly, with the teams trading leads throughout. Led by Clarke Petterson with three first half goals. The Thunderbirds led 8-7 at the half.
Halifax took charge in the third quarter, with Petterson again leading the way with a pair of goals. The Thunderbirds would add five in the quarter to take a 13-8 lead heading to the fourth. In the final frame the defense took over. Both Warren Hill and Aden Walsh were outstanding in the frame. Halifax would come away with the 14-10 victory.
To The Game:
Clarke Petterson opened the scoring on a great individual effort scoring unassisted at 0:55 seconds, but goals from Riley Loewan and Noah Manning 0:46 seconds apart gave Calgary the lead early in the game.
Randy Staats tied the game on the power-play off a cross floor pass from Cody Jamieson, followed by Stephen Keogh with a goal from in close to give the Thunderbirds the lead at 9:57.
Braydon Mayea converted a Tanner Cook feed 0:27 seconds later to deadlock the game.
After one quarter, Halifax 3 Calgary 3.
Second Quarter:
Kyle Pepper opened the second quarter scoring with a blast off a Jack Follows pass at 1:19 to give Calgary the lead, but Clarke Petterson’s second of the game off a Cody Jamieson feed tied the game once more.
Noah Manning again gave the Roughnecks the lead scoring unassisted at 5:10, but goals from Randy Staats and Clarke Petterson 1:08 apart had the Thunderbirds in the lead once again.

The see-saw battle continued with Tyler Pace, and Braydon Mayea finding the net for Calgary, but a blast from Wake:Riat Bowhunter, and Jason Knox late in the half had Halifax up at the break.
At halftime, Halifax 8 Calgary 7.

Third Quarter:
Tanner Cook opened the second half tying the game for Calgary off a Riley Loewan feed at 0:52 seconds, but the Thunderbirds took over the rest of the quarter.
Graham Hossack scored in transition unassisted at 2:45, followed by Colton Armstrong with a laser to the corner off a Cody Jamieson pass at 4:02.

The Thunderbirds barrage continued with Brendan Bomberry converting a Randy Staats pass from in close at 9:18, followed by a pair of Clarke Petterson goals. The first off a Cody Jamieson feed at 13:39, followed by a buzzer beater off a Randy Staats pass at 14:59.
After three quarters, Halifax 13 Calgary 8.
Fourth Quarter:
The Roughnecks replaced Aden Walsh with Colby Bowman in net.
Haiden Dickson got Calgary back on track with a shot from in close off a Braydon Mayea pass at 2:18, but Randy Staats replied with a sidearm snipe off a Will MacLeod feed at 5:04.
Tanner Cook finished a Tyler Pace pass at 13:19, but it was too little too late.
Final score, Halifax 14 Calgary 10.
