The Coquitlam Adanacs hosted the Burnaby Lakers at the Coquitlam Sports Centre Saturday night. Coquitlam entered the game at 1-1, having lost to Victoria and defeated New Westminster in Week 1. Burnaby had a tougher time to open the season, yielding 33 goals combined in losses to New Westminster and Maple Ridge. It would get even worse for the Lakers, as they managed very little offense in a 15-3 loss that dropped them to 0-3 on the season. The Adanacs improved to 2-1 on the year and 2-0 at home.
Coquitlam wasted no time in the first period, building an 8-0 lead after 20 minutes. Laszlo Henning and Brian Gillis each had two goals in the period as the Adanacs outshot Burnaby 25-7. Coquitlam also got goals from Jalen Chaster, Sean Kriwokon, Adam Noakes, and Thomas Semple.
The second period was much more balanced, both in shots (18-17 in favor of the Adanacs) and in goals, with each team netting three. Ben Stewart and Ethan M’Lot scored a minute apart to get the Lakers on the board, and Hudson “Finn” Halladay added a power play goal late in the frame. However, Coquitlam would get another goal from Chaster, as well as a marker from Ben Coghill and a shorthanded goal from Kyle Brunsch to lead 11-3 after two periods.
Adanacs cruise to second win of season
The third period was all Adanacs again, outshooting Burnaby 18-7 and outscoring them 4-0 for the 15-3 final margin. Kean Moon scored back-to-back, Dennon Armstrong joined the action, and Gillis closed the scoring with his hat trick goal. Moon (2g, 4a) was named 1st Star of the Game, and Chaster (2g, 4a) took home 3rd Star honors. Goaltender Christian Del Bianco (24 saves, 3 GA in 50-plus minutes) made it a clean sweep for the Adanacs, taking home 2nd Star of the Game. Lakers goalie Keegan Melenychuk stopped 45 of 59 shots faced in the loss. Burnaby’s schedule doesn’t get any easier in Week 3, as they travel to both New Westminster and Victoria. Coquitlam hosts the Langley Thunder next week, looking to stay undefeated at home.
