In the history of the Philadelphia Phillies they have had very talented third base players. From Mike Schmidt to Scott Rolen, to even the World Series Champion, Pedro Feliz. Alec Bohm was drafted by the Phillies with the hopes of becoming the next great third baseman for the Phillies. The end of last season showed Alec being benched because he threw a fit on the field for flying out. The beginning of this season has shown much of the same from Alec. So approaching the trade deadline this season the Phillies might think about trading Alec for players that can best act professionally and perform at a legendary third baseman’s level.
The idea of Alec Bohm being traded has existed for the last 7 months, but it has not merited any reasonable trade offers. Has Alec’s behavior and lack of success made him untradeable? Well, if your the Phillies organization you would hope not. We have to remember that last season Bohm was an All-star, and was in the top 5 in the majors in doubles. He has shown flashes of greatness, but showing that he can’t be consistent with his performance shows that it may not be a match made in heaven for the long term. There is also another prime example of Bohm’s immaturity. When Alec was caught saying, “I hate this place.” When there was a live microphone that picked him up. After that quote hit sports talk radio and the fans, it was a firestorm, that Alec created. He later solved it by owning what he had said and apologizing to the fanbase.
As a passionate fan that heard that at the time, I was furious. But when he owned it, I felt like he really felt guilty for being caught, but that the apology was not completely authentic. With Alec’s actions of late it makes me think that my suspicions about his sincereness of that apology were right.
I feel like Alec could be a good trade piece for the Phillies, but finding the right dance partner to trade with seems to be the true challenge. At some point in a professional ballplayer’s life you have to choose whether your going to be iconic or idiotic. Right now it seems like Bohm is leaning towards idiotic.
