Charlotte FC Ready for Grueling Second Half as Dean Smith Welcomes Allan Saint-Maximin

Charlotte FC enters the second half of its 2026 MLS campaign with renewed optimism after adding former Premier League winger Allan Saint-Maximin, while head coach Dean Smith believes his squad is prepared for one of the busiest stretches of the season.

Speaking with the media following the World Cup break, Smith provided encouraging injury updates on several key players. Idan Toklomati and Nathan Byrne are both recovering from hamstring issues and are expected to return for Charlotte’s upcoming MLS match against Atlanta United, while AJ is expected to miss approximately four weeks after suffering a shoulder injury in training.

Much of the conversation centered around the club’s newest signing, Saint-Maximin. Smith described the French attacker as a player capable of bringing “pace, power and flair,” while also praising his leadership qualities and football intelligence.

The Charlotte manager revealed he personally met with Saint-Maximin over breakfast in London, where the two discussed the club’s long-term vision. According to Smith, the former Newcastle United standout wants to leave a lasting legacy in Charlotte rather than simply adding another stop to his professional career.

Smith also rejected comparisons between Saint-Maximin and outgoing winger Wilfried Zaha, emphasizing that the two possess very different playing styles. Instead, he expects Saint-Maximin to complement playmaker Pep Biel while adding another dynamic attacking option capable of changing matches individually.

With the MLS schedule compressed following the FIFA World Cup break, Charlotte now faces a demanding run of regular season matches along with Leagues Cup competition. Smith said the club treated the break as a “mini preseason,” carefully balancing fitness with recovery to prepare for a congested schedule featuring frequent midweek matches.

Rather than focusing on the league standings, Smith said his priority remains building consistency one match at a time.

“Our aim is to improve on last season,” he explained, expressing confidence that Charlotte has the talent to put together a strong run over the final months of the campaign. He also highlighted the importance of squad depth, noting that multiple players have stepped up during training and are pushing for increased playing time as fixture congestion intensifies.

Smith believes the excitement generated by the 2026 FIFA World Cup can also provide a boost for Major League Soccer. While disappointed the United States did not advance further, he praised the national team’s performance for inspiring new fans and hopes that enthusiasm carries over into the remainder of the MLS season.

With reinforcements arriving, key players nearing full fitness and one of the league’s deepest schedules ahead, Charlotte FC believes it is well positioned to make a push during the second half of the 2026 season.
