Maclean “Mac” Learned, goalkeeper for New York City FC II, recently joined the Stream Punk Soccer channel to discuss his personal and professional growth—both on the pitch and off it.
Rising Through the Ranks
Mac’s soccer story began young—he started playing at age 4 and eventually became the standout keeper for Sacramento State. Over three full seasons (2022–24), he led the Big West Conference in saves and ranked nationally among the leaders in total saves, capped by several shutouts and high-stakes performances.
Graduating in 2024, Mac transitioned from college to the professional ranks. He signed with NYCFC II in March 2025, taking the number 70 jersey. His debut season has seen six appearances and one clean sheet to date .
Stepping onto the Professional Stage
Building on his college success, Mac earned a short-term contract to join the first team for the 2025 U.S. Open Cup—marking a key milestone in his pro journey. He joined teammates Peter Molinari and Seymour Reid on loan from the reserve squad. Earlier in January, Mac even traveled with NYCFC’s preseason training group, indicating the club sees strong potential in him.
In our interview with him, Mac shared insights into:
- Upbringing & mindset: He emphasized early discipline, mental preparation, and resilience—how patience between the posts and adaptability under pressure have shaped his path.
- Professional ambitions: Mac spoke candidly about setting short-term goals (like his Open Cup call-up) and projecting confidence toward ambitious long-term targets—such as fighting for an MLS contract.
- Growth journey: He reflected on bridging the gap between college and pro play—emphasizing quicker decision-making as a crucial pivot.
🧭 What He Brings to NYCFC II
Mac’s collegiate track record suggests he’s no stranger to consistent, high-pressure performance. His stats—over 80 saves in conferences and national rankings as a top shot-stopper—highlight both durability and technical skill.
That success has translated quickly: even with limited minutes, he’s already secured a clean sheet. His preseason and Open Cup call-ups illustrate the trust NYCFC hierarchy places in his potential .
🗺️ Looking Ahead
With a contract into late 2025, Mac’s focus is clear: continue building strong showings with NYCFC II, earn more short-term MLS call-ups, and compete for a permanent first-team role. His mindset, work ethic, and technical growth make him an intriguing prospect to watch as NYCFC continues grooming its Next Pro talent.
