This year’s Pirates revenge tour started with a 57-53 win over St. Peters, no matter how many times they tried to give away the game.
Seton Hall narrowly pulled away in the final five minutes of a game they hoped would echo their status as wronged victims of the NCAA who captured the NIT. The Pirates led for over 26 minutes, but the Peacocks, despite having three players foul out, led by one with 5:26 to play before Chaunce Jenkins & Prince Aligbe anchored a 10-0 run.
Jenkins led all scorers with 19 points, and tied with Dylan Addae-Wusu for the team lead with six rebounds. The grad transfer from Old Dominion was the only consistently good scorer for the Pirates, as Aligbe finished second with only 10 points.
As in years past, the Pirates again struggled at the free throw line, going 24 of 37. “We got to the line too many times to not cash in,” Jenkins said of the charity stripe woes.
Perhaps a sign of frustration, Shaheen Holloway arrived at the postgame press conference with a bandage on his wrist due to an injury he claimed took place at halftime. “Coaching stuff, just coaching stuff,” claimed Holloway regarding the injury’s cause.
Among the 10 newcomers, Yacine Toumi did not score in the second half, but did show flashes of brilliance with seven points and two rebounds in the first, before a late block to help ice the game. Addae-Wusu finished with eight points and six rebounds, five of which came in the second half.
The Peacocks kept themselves in the game by shooting 6 of 13 from downtown in the first half, but only hit one three-pointer after the break. Their small lineup (five players over 20 minutes) put them in foul trouble, with four Peacocks fouling out.
Seton Hall will return to action at Walsh Gymnasium on Saturday against Fordham.
