The March to May Begins! The Albany FireWolves (3-9) traveled to Blue Cross Arena on Friday, February 28, looking to build on their recent win over the Philadelphia Wings. However, despite a strong second-half push, the FireWolves ultimately fell 14-7 to the Rochester Knighthawks (6-7). A six-goal fourth-quarter run and costly mistakes down the stretch allowed Rochester to pull away for a dominant victory.

Defensive Battle in the First Half

The game started as a defensive grind, with both teams struggling to find the back of the net in the opening minutes. Albany goaltender Doug Jamieson stood tall early, making several key saves to keep Rochester at bay. However, the Knighthawks eventually broke through when Connor Fields tallied his first of seven points on the night, beating Jamieson with a well-placed shot to give Rochester a 1-0 lead.

Just 40 seconds later, Curtis Knight capitalized on a rebound, finishing a quick put-back to extend the Knighthawks’ lead to 2-0. The defensive standoff resumed until the final three minutes of the first quarter when Ryan Smith netted his first of four goals, capping a near-perfect opening frame for Rochester and giving them a 3-0 advantage.

Albany’s offense struggled to generate quality chances in the second quarter, largely due to Rochester’s stifling defense and the strong play of goaltender Rylan Hartley. The FireWolves managed just two goals in the frame—one from Will Johansen in transition and another from Dyson Williams on a power-play finish near the crease with 30 seconds left in the half.

However, the Knighthawks never allowed Albany to gain momentum. Ryan Smith and Connor Fields each struck again, sending Rochester into the locker room with a 5-2 lead at halftime.

Despite Rochester extending their lead with quick goals from Thomas McConvey and Ryland Rees, Albany emerged from halftime with renewed energy. Sam Firth jumpstarted the FireWolves with a goal, sparking a three-goal run that saw Colton Watkinson and Dyson Williams also find the back of the net, cutting the Knighthawks’ lead to two.

Albany appeared to be seizing momentum, but Curtis Knight delivered a key goal late in the third to put Rochester back up by three, 8-5, heading into the final quarter.

Knighthawks Pull Away Late

Despite the FireWolves’ push in the third and two quick power-play goals from Alex Simmons and Dyson Williams to start the fourth, Albany’s comeback hopes were crushed by a disastrous final sequence.

Ryan Lanchbury netted back-to-back goals to begin Rochester’s fourth-quarter surge, and a costly five-minute major penalty against Albany for cross-checking gave the Knighthawks an extended power play. They took full advantage, erupting for four straight power-play goals and sealing the game with a six-goal run.

Looking Forward

With this loss, the FireWolves drop to 3-9 on the season and continue searching for consistency. They’ll need to regroup quickly as they prepare for a crucial rematch against the Philadelphia Wings this weekend at Wells Fargo Center. Albany must clean up their defensive miscues and find a way to generate more offensive chances if they want to snap their road struggles.

Meanwhile, the Knighthawks improve to 6-7 and strengthen their playoff position. They’ll look to keep their momentum going as they prepare to face the Las Vegas Desert Dogs in their next matchup.

For Albany, the message is clear: if they want to salvage their season, they need to put this loss behind them and focus on bouncing back against Philadelphia.
